setting up my hobo transducer mount for my kayak

G'day,

Looking for some ideas for those better at DIY...

Bought a Humminbird sounder recently, and looking to fit my transducer mount and being a cheapskate about it.

This is the idea I have in my head at the moment, but I'm a little stuck on mounting the transducer onto the PVC.

One option is to mount it from the side

Another option from the bottom

Looking to go with the latter.
Made myself an adapter this morning, and will drill a hole soon to thread the bolt through, but I'm stuck on what sort of resin or sealant (or rubber bung plastic?) I can use to fill the gap so there's little slop in the connection. Don't want it to be permanent like epoxy, maybe something more like a stiff putty.

The other idea I'm thinking is a camera/flash gooseneck attached to the tripod screw you can see in the first image.

Something like this would also make the install super simple, but $50-60 to buy here... for a metal strap and plastic mount.

and I enjoy the DIY aspect.

I would be looking at scrounging some aluminium flat plate from some where as you will be surprised how much drag even a relatively small diameter pvc tube likethat will cause.
Cheers Brendon

Heat up the PVC and flatten or teardrop it to reduce drag and add some lead shot into the bottom of it.

The photo that would've made the original post make more sense didn't post properly (or at all), but here it is.

Originally, I wanted to fill this in with resin/sealant/putty to give it a tight fit, but seems like that won't be necessary.

Thanks for the tip re: alu flat. If the PVC doesn't work out, might try slotting the top elbow and lower collar to accept an alu flat.

My ideal solution would be the tripod screw + gooseneck solution. Might come in this week from aliexpress...

Make sure you make the it into the rod holder as snug as you can. You don't want that tranny flapping around down there... So to speak.

I think this is the final iteration.

Will try this, and if this fails, will give in hull a go.

Looks the goods - and if drag is an issue you can just raise the arm and paddle around with it out of the water until you reach your hotspot

Had a think over the weekend how to make the in hull option work for me (easily removable). This is what I ended up with.

I'll need to seal the container to the hull.

Then, on the water:
Fit a piece of foam with transducer cutout in the container.
Fill the container with water somewhere between top and bottom of foam.
Put the transducer in the cutout until a bit of water squeezes out.
Optional: thread a wooden chopstick through the transducer mounting hole

I think this way, the foam should stop the water from sloshing about and emptying the well.

Cut the bottom out of the container, leaving about a 5mm lip and silicone it to the hull.
I've seen guys fix their transducer to the lid and just fit that to the container when full of water for a sealed finish.
The only problem with through the hull is you won't get an accurate water temperature reading.

You guys are right. In/thru hull is the way to go.
Just got to find a right piece of foam/sponge now.

How's the in-hull install working so far? I've done the same for a Garmin Echo 300c and have had it installed this way for 5 years without issue. I'm wonder how this will work if i upgraded my sounder to one with side scan, down scan etc.

Yeah, working well.
I'm running the Helix 5 sonar/downscan (no sidescan).
No issues at all with resolution/noise, etc.
Haven't looked back since changing to in hull.
The only thing I've done is switch to a stiffer foam (cutdown from a yoga foam block).
