10lb Berkely Vanish
i'm about to buy 10lb vanish, but im not sure whether thats too big.
i've never used braid before and i'm really not sure what to buy and whats the easiest to use. is fireline better or is the berkely vanish. and how much does the 8-10lb fireline or vanish cost.. could somebody please explain to me the advantages of fireline over vanish. thank you |

Vanish aint a braid, more like mono. Really used as a leader which is joined to the end of the mainline ie. fireline. Leader is used cos it's clear compaired to the braid, so the fish cant see it and has alot better abraision resistance if it rubs up against snags etc. HTH.

4 - 8 fireline is the norm for bream fishing. 4lb may sound too light, but it is very strong for the size of it. I used 4 fireline but have recently switched to 4lb FINS and find it much better than fireline, but it is also more expensive. HTH

If your bream fishing you dont need anything bigger than 6lb braid. Most guys use braid as the mainline with about a 1mt flurocarbon leader at the end. As a rule i have spare spools, when im fishing near snags and sharp rocks i use 6lb, anwhere else its 4lb.

I think 250 yards of vanish will be $20 and 125 yards of fireline will be $25. With fireline you'll need leader and probally backing as well. Correct me if Im wrong, But I think I'm right

I just loaded my new Stradic with 4lb FINS and i didnt need any backing, it filled the spool perfectly.

10 lbs Vanish is too heavy for bream fishing, unless you use it around pylons and racks. Try to use 6-8 lbs leader, much higher the strike rate.

Don't go with Vanish line. That's the 250yd spool. It is not suitable for leader. Buy the leadr material, it comes on a small, 25yd (or is it 50?) spool, and shouldn't cost more than 15 bucks.

i use 6 lb fire line and 10 lb vanish and have had no problems, i would definatly go for some kind of braid when SP fishing as you need it to giv the Sp a nice action, instead of losing all of your rod movement in line stretch

Ted, it's 45m.
Yeah, he's right too, about the Vanish 'line' not being suitable for leader. It's actually not 100% fluroucarbon, either that, or they've manked it up, because it's a LOT softer than fluroucarbon generally is. As far as leader material goes, Berkley Vanish ain't the best, but it'll do for most bream fishing situations. I regularly use it when spinning the Yarra because I don't like the idea of trying to banjo twang a 15 buck lure on 5lb leader (rarely works, trust me). Failing the banjo, with 10lb, you can at least pull on it in different directions with some sort of force, and occassionally, you get it back, snag and all... Still, Alex has a point, lighter trace = higher strike rate. Bit of a compromise in the end, really... Owen
