Got him!

He's bigger than i wanted but should be ok... decided to just get the one because of the tank size.

Caught a few bait fish at lake monger yesterday and he smahsed them (8 of them) within about 30 seconds! He had only been in the tank for 2 hours also, so he must not be too stressed out.

Tried feeding him blood worms but he wasnt that interested?
Is ther a way to get them onto dead food?

Cheers for the help!

Looks good mate.

Try weening it onto dry food by getting it worked up with a few live fish then as its feeding, drop some pellets in front of it. eventually you can completely replace live food but its always good for them from time to time.

Crickets...

Serge get him live crickets, there's a City Farmers or something on Beach rd in Malaga that sells them. About $7.00 for 50 or so. Will easily last a couple of weeks. As a bonus you get to watch him smash them off the surface.
Earth worms will be good too rather than bloodies.

Can stay in the container you purchase them and feed them slices of raw carrot, dry cat food or mice/rat cubes

Just feed him the frozen fish cubes you can get in Pet Shops - cost about $6 a packet They come in assorted flavours in fish, beef hearts, turtle, etc etc. That's what I feed my yabbies one. One guy here used to have a redfin in a huge tank for years, that's what he fed his redfin. I think the Mrs tends to overfeed it like she does with humans and thus it grew extremely huge and fat. The redfin I believe is now happily swimming back with his family, several years later.

as above

Yep as Warren said they'll happily live in the container until they have to DIE. Make sure you keep a wet paper towel folded up in the corner of the container or they tend to cark it with the lack of humidity in Perth. Noisy little bastards though.
Check out the fish while you're there big barra , saratoga and even a few amazon Peakokc Bass about 2 kilo or so. Awesome joint, gets the casting arm twitching every time I go in.

Edit cos you can't say DohDohDohDoh only kokc

So he had one day of not eating (stressed i thnk) and now he's happily eating anythign i put in the tank!

Smashing crickets off the surface or pulling bits of prawn out of my fingers!

Very cool.
Looks similar to a barra the way they grab stuff off the surface!

Question is, how much do i feed him?
How many crickets per day for example. I have medium sized crickets, just over 1cm in length....

haha we'll see what happens when he gets too big for the tank...

But he has a name now (marmaduke) so no one's going to eat him!

I know this is a pretty darn old thread, but I found it while googling redfin in aquariums as I just had a little 4in reddie smash my surface lure and I kept him.

Not a great species for an aquarium, easily stressed and contract desieses like white spot very easily.
