Pflueger Trion 1-3kg Field Test

Brand:Pfleuger
Model:Trion
Line Class:1-3kg
Cast Weight:Handles anything up to 8grams
Product ID:PFLT-SP701ULT
Price As Tested:$80 DohDohDoh (Be quick)
Pieces:1
Line weight tested:1kg
Reel used:Tokushima ss1000 11 Ball Bearing

HM45 Graphite.Nice weight.
Well above average cork quality.
Fuji seat and Alconite guides.
Good amount of runners.Suitably spaced.
Binding looks cheap, not straight finish when bound.
Extremely light, perhaps the lightest i have ever used.
Attractive Split Butt design.Aluminium (?) caps on ends of cork.

First impression was tip was a bit 'soft'.Ok for HB,but for SP,i would have prefered something a bit stiffer. However was equally up to the task.

Fantastic using bait.Lots of feel.I only use small sinkers,so casting distance is always an issue, but with this rod,i can throw little weights further than i am used to.Especially my 4g Surface Poppers.

When i used HB's and SP's i have found that this rod is absolutely perfect for this application.

Seems to pull in the weighter fish with ease.I found that with the butt length,i can really stick it to the bigger species.

Caught a 70cm Flathead,on 1kg,and this rod really does pull.

Overall unreal value @ $80.Trying making it for that !!

Blank construction looks nice in sunlight, with the internal wraps showing...classy.

Out of the 5 that i looked at,only 2 had the reel seat and runners lining up.This is an absolute disgrace by Pflueger, which should have been correctly lined up without customers checking, and should have been found before hitting the shelves,if there was a quality control in place.

Overall 8/10.

Looses points for seat alignment issue and cheap looking binding.

Good Points

*Value for money
*Light as a feather
*Good cork
*Fuji gear with heaps of guides
*5 year 'Very Conditional' Warranty
*Great at all different styles of fishing
*Great looking blank

Thanks for the review.

Could you please be more specific to define the "good" and "Suitably" in the quoted para?

Good amount: 6, 7, 8? How many is not a 'good' amount?

Suitably spaced: is there a rule how they should be spaced?

I just found those statements a bit vague, that's all.

Cheers

The Tokushima Reels were $110 on one site and $75 on another at the time...

I got it for $28 delivered !

Its a great reel, well worth the investment, and to be honest, easily matches many $100 plus reels.....

I suppose anything over 6 is a fair amount on a 7 foot rod.

Suitably spaced basically means that when the rod is loaded, the line is
evenly placed on the bottom of the runners ( guides ).

If they werent spaced correctly, you have an uneven load,so some runners
(guides )the line would touch the bottom, but on some they wouldnt.

Totally agree they are cheap reels. I have the tokushima 2500 spinning reel and the handle on mine has about 4mm of play/slop in it when tightened up. They also *included* an extra washer on the spool shaft on mine, causing my line to lay thicker to the bottom of the spool.

This reel sits in my tackle storage container as a spare reel for young kids.

nice report.
refreshing to read about the faults, as well as the good bits.
not every one has $1000 outfits.
would be good if others gave their opinion on gear they've bought and used recently.
cheers bomb

I had a pretty big weekend with the Tokushima 1000,and i quickly realised that yes,it is a cheap reel....with limitations.

I pulled it apart last night and serviced it,good as gold....

However,it is not sealed at the top shaft,so it gets quite alot of sand and water into the gear drive, and the front bearing and pinion bearing are very ordinary ( i was in the Bearing Industry for 15 years ).

It does the job,and its ready to go,but i am buying another reel today...i will post a Field Report Monday.

I can see why people buy good quality gear.....

But i reckon the mid-range stuff will satisfy atleast 7 out of 10 people.

I do fish with quite a few blokes that are the same as me,medium-high range, about $200 outfits.

But i also fish with others who spend quite alot on tackle, but at the end of the day....i want value and quality...I would love a new G-Loomis,but i am clumsy as...and i would be shattered if i snapped it.

I also have one of the 1st SHIMANO CATANA's that came into the country. Its a fantastic rod.

Nothing like the new ones...heaps better...and a mate who uses some very high end gear was impressed when he used it...

I had for atleast 4 years....and its caught more fish that i can count..!!

Great rod,and you could not replace it....ever.

High end gear, for sure, but damn, you could catch fish on a Bart Simpson Kmart Special....it would just be a pain the ass the use it !!! ( and embarassing )

i love the top end stuff too ,but with all the diff types of fishing i do i would need to rob a bank.
middle of the road stuff for me ,even though in certain fave fishin styles i do go towards the top shelf .
cheers bomb
