Thumbs up Hysucat Foils

Everything you ever wanted to know about hysucat foils...

http://www.sun.ac.za/kie/unistel/tec...s/foiltech.htm

I wouldn't swear to it on a stck of bibles, but likely the attack angle of the foil might wanna be in the 3 - 3.5 degrees range maybe...(at leasrt thats what attack angle a lot of model aircraft seem to use.

Maybe you engineer the mounting so that the attack angle can be varied with a locking pin system...and trail it at various angles of attack...

It says in the website they cast these foils from stainless steel from memory, BUT I would imagine that for a small craft like yours - an alloy wing made up from cnc plasma cut parts welded together and strutted in the middle to the centreline of the craft should be able to be designed to carry the weight of the craft and allow for stersses of hitting waves etc...

No doubt you've seen model aircraft wing sections made from balsa etc...I would think possibly you could do the same in plate alloy....you might have to get the pices rolled to match the curvature of the wing....weld the underside which takes all the stress from inside and out and then weld the top piece over the frames and stringers from the outside...

Basically the bottom sheet should take most of the stress?..

Your an engineer - you'll work it out!

Didn't Rod here say one of the Hysucat 'directors' has just moved to Perth? Maybe if you get his contact details he might help out with some of the critical design details...

Either that or get one of the naval architects who post on www.boatdesign.net to give you some pointers... Will Allison from Tassie maybe..

Makin a boomerang can't be that hard - the Aborigines been at it for years - maybe consult Billy Cokebottle down under the Garret Road traffic bridge for a few pointers!

Should be a piece a cake - you know I reckon I'd make the foil removable...so you can either have it or not have it...

For example - you need a specialised float on trailer if a permanent foil is on there....something with no centre guide like the cat trailers have...

Whereas - if the foils removable - maybe you only use it when you need it....

Also of course you can "experiment" with different foils designs if your not entirel happy with the first...

Lastly - if the mount is adjustable for attack angle - you can likewise adjust that with washers placement as shims to get an attack angle that works. (The centre support strut mount would likewise need some "adjustability" as the attack angle changed).

Hell - if the attack angle were alterable while on the run via either an electric screw ram (like the ones used in Lenco trolling tabs) or a hydralic ram (like the ones used on bennet trim tabs, or the ones on an ordinary OB tilt n trim...) - you could "alter the foil attack angle while on the run - via a pivot at the two outside mounts and a ram on the centre support strut.

Oil pressure for the adjustment COULD by use of a pipe from the normal OB tilt n trim...with a two way tap be achieved using the existing engines tilt trim motor, just swing the tap on the console and hit tilt n trim rocker switch to ease or increase the attack angle of the foil once on plane..then switch back to OB tilt for adjusting engine trim - of course the hydraulic jackplates ALSO have their own hydraulic pumps lines and rams, so adjustment for a ram assisted foil attack angle system could be bled from one or both of of those....with the right plumbing....and switching!.

Just depends I guess - how fancy you want to go - but some ability to adjust might be a good thing in as far as "optimising" control...

Just a thought for what it'ss worth.

Cheers!

What will you name this thing?

It should look a lot like a manta ray...(from underneath).

With all the technology - bells and whistles - what about "enterprise" or "Beam me up Scotty"

Seeing it's a sort of cat, "Catastrophy".

"The Cats Whiskers"

"V Fa La France!"

"Sail la Vee" (play on words of the French - 'Cest le Vie')

"Vee Haf Vays" (Of Makink You Fish!)

"V fa Victory"

"Flying Vee"

"Sea Sled"

"Drats, Foiled Again!".

"Foil & Counterfoil"

"Olif-foil" (popeyes sweetheart, Olive Oyl)

Vee Fiol.

Vee, vee, vee, va-voom!.

Sea Vee

C V

Foil me once!

Boomer-Vee

Vee Vie Vo Vum...(I smell the blood of an englishman!)

"Vell, I'll Vee Damned!"

I'm sure you get the idea..

Cheers!

Hi Choppy,
if you boot it will lift then flatten out, but with a gradual increase of throttle will not move of the level ..

Thanks for the link Trouty. I'll definitely look into the foils further. I'll let you know how i go.

As for the name you have got some good suggestions.
So far i have only come up with "Bcause" - the reasoning is that everyone keeps asking me WHY? Especially my brother in law after a few drinks.

Matty: - A great and interesting boat. It would have to be pretty heavy wouldn't it! What are its approx. dimensions? As soon as i saw it i had the theme song for the cartoon "Transformers" running through my mind.

My only personal concern with the boat would be the maintenance. But then i suppose if you have the patience to build something that complex i'm sure you will make the time to take proper care of it.

Badges68: - The only reason i asked is that i had assumed the boat would have similar characteristics to a boat built here in Australia. The stinger by Stessl. In reports i have read about the boat, they have stated that it gradually rises onto a plan without any distinct rise.

Cheers

jetson here...

trouty and don!
i finally saw that interesting mono / tri hull in this thread. i've been thinking about that. polinesians and many others have been expirimenting with such. as said above: we'll see more of this i belive also. that are the liftplates i need for my swath trike! and still? want alu pipes like on all cats. how about putting skirts on the bow and the stern of your hysucat and pump it up like a hoovercraft trouty? call it a hysuhoofcat? can i go for "sail la vee" on my next boat? ;-)

fine IVB your building choppy! dont think the (canted) OB's close together makes much differce; its the altered trust direction that makes the inward heeling.

best to all boaters and fishers

Talking Howdt Yipster.

Nice of you to drop in downunder, Glad you got to see the gogo gadget extrendo boat, pretty neat huh?

I was meaning to post pics to boatdesign.net but have been having puter problems the last week or so - I'll try n get round to it in the next day or so.

Hover seasled eh?

I reckon all choppy needs is my canted ion propulsion wormhole water traction drive and he will be able to climb walls with his boat like and aqauatic version of the human fly!

the Inverted V could be a very interesting boat yet Yipster - how bout you show the breamers a pic of your water trike - maybe they could catch bream from it?

Now that i would like to see!

Getting the livewells aboard could be a probelm, no?

Cheers!

Have you seen any sites that have plans for a small say 12 foot plywood IVB. Some of the pictures on the http://invertedvboats.20m.com/ site would make great bream boats.

Thumbs down Hi Bob,

Funny enough, I havent seen any sites where there are plans for an Inverted V boat...the only two guys I know who might be able to help you are Don and Choppy here on this thread.

Obviously Choppy knows someone 9in melbourne he got hsiplans from and obviously Don has plans somewhere for his plywood stictch n glue versions, so likely they would be the best sources to start with.

Ask away Bob...and good luck...

There are "other" types of multihull - tri hulls cats tunnel hulls inverted V's of course and who knows what else?...

It's very expensive to getplans drawn, theres almost as much work in drawing plans for a 25 ft boat as a 60 fter so the cost is relatively high - and good designers tend not to spend a lot of their time on 12 ft hulls unless they think they can sell a gazillion of them - lets face it the markets pretty well catered for already with quite successful dingy designs...

That said - there ARE guys who are studying naval architecture etc who post over at www.boatdesign.net - who MIGHT scratch out a 12 ft inveted V plan for you if you post up and ask nicely..or someone may have a set of larger plans they could scale down etc..

You'll never know unless you ask...

Best of luck with it...

Cheers!

http://foxxaero.homestead.com/indrad_062.html shows a lot more extreme boat designs, most aint real fishing platforms though...

Plans - From Ray Lawrence Cole

JellyBobr: - I purchased my plans from Ray Cole.

I have attached an email below he sent me when i enquired about his aluminium hull

"The estimated bare hull mass of Platypus is 150 kg. Allowing 25kg for fuel and two crew at 150kg, 80kg for the live tank and 25kg Fishing gear and food and drink, plus anchors, mooring lines and other mandatory equipment at 20kg the displacement is then 450kg

At the design displacement of 400kg the mass per immersion is 46kg/cm immersion so with your load she would draw an extra 1cm. i.e. 150mm

To purchase the plans you send me a cheque or money order to Small Craft Design and Services P/L 29 Parnell St Cheltenham Vic 3192. Telephone (03) 9583 7711.

I dont really think you can compare the shark cat and the sea sled hullforms, but all the theory says that the sea sled is excellent in a chop and this has been borne out by the builder of the Plywood version of Platypus which I call Numbat. I enclose a picture of the first Numbat used in Wilson Inlet near Denmark in West Australia.
Cheers
Ray Cole"

(please note that i have no business association with Ray Cole)

I will dig up the of the Boat image he refers to above and post it once i find it. The Platypus is 4.1m long and can be altered be extended/shortened by 10% wihtout impacting on the hull performance.

Yipster: - I'm sure the canting will add some assistance to making the boat heel inwards when turning, i was under the impression that the actual altered thrust directions with the motors closer together would cause less of a force moment around the center line of the boat then they would if they were further apart (i'm not sure if i understood your comment correct - please correct me if i have).

Trouty: - More Research into the Hydrfoils

I don't remember if it was this thread that i mentioned my father has a CCC hydrfoil boat (i couldn't be bothered going back through all the pages.) But it has a tendency to porpose when lightly loaded i.e. only 2 people and gear aboard. When heavly loaded it performs great, i.e. 5 people up it actually get a couple of km/h more in top speed.

I thought heck, so i gave Marcel a call at CCC. I told him from the beginning of the conversation that i was only enquiring and had no intention of buying a boat - and he still assisted me as if i were his best customer - thanks. In short he said the reason that they dropped the hydrfoil on his 5m boat was that it porposed when lightly loaded. He mentioned that in his 20years of experience he has found that the hydrfoils only work effectively and efficently on boats which are 6m and longer. Obviously something to do with weight. I just wonder if the weight of the livewell is enough to overcome this - the only problem occurs when you socially want to use the boat! - i'll keep looking into it.

Cheers
Choppy

Another Nice Boat Badges68

That definitely would be a handy bream boat doing 27mph with a 25hp. I like the way you have created the bow, it gives the boat a nice touch.

I honestly cannot remember how much he charged me. If i can find it i will PM you, I don't think it would be appropriate to advertise some elses sale cost especially because it was so long ago.

How long did it take roughly for you to build your boats from ply?
It appears like you have definitely have been very busy building the fleet you currently have.

How do you find the boats performance in heavy chop at full throttle, do they slam down hard and bottom out - i'm not far on finding out for myself its just that i'm getting itchy feet.

Cheers
Choppy

Hi Choppy,
the 6.5M took us 3 weeks to finish to gunwale 2 full time..
my 3.0M took about a week for basic with 2 then i finished myself in about 2 weeks.
then i added the extra 500cm later ..
until i can see under the bow and stern of yours will not be able to comment .. i hope you havent built similar to that one in your last pic!!!!
there are also quite a few things you will need to do as i have found out over the years of use of this hull.
as to ..
(How do you find the boats performance in heavy chop at full throttle)
well any boat will do this depending on the wave length and the boat hull length .. i personally know how to handle either of my boats in any given water conditions and dont ever push the envelope..
dont forget you have no bow wave going outwards it all goes inwards under the hull and with all that air going in also you have a very effiecient cushion..
it is still the most efficient hull i have ever driven..
i have put it through seas that i would never have attempted with a conventional hull..
the reason i asked about the price you paid for the plan was i have 61 photo's of the ivb's(mostly construction info) - a 3d program(which can be altered for different sizes) - CAD drawing files (Critical construction areas) which are available at a price!!! these are in 3 zip files
