Computer virus - need help!

Hi all

My computer has contracted a virus: BC Peacomm Trojan.

Step 1: I have disabled/switched off system restore

Step 2:Run live update (Symantec)

Step 3: Apparently the next step is to: scan all files, however after trying this a couple of times the computer restarts itself before the scan has been completed.

I am guessing here (I'm not full bottle on viruses and the like) but is the trojan restarting the computer when the scan detects it? Therefore protecting itself from being deleted?

I need to complete the antivirus scan and delete all threats.

Is there something I'm missing here?

Does anyone have any other instructions or another method of deleting this virus?

Please help, this is driving me crazy.

Thanks
Marc

Marc,

I have a couple of other programs that have helped me rid of some pests like this- Spybot search and destroy, and Ad Aware SE personal.

I would try to boot up without scanning then run these two programs and then your antivirus. Also i wouldnt leave the computer connected to the net that much as it might be bringing a whole lot of other nasties with it.

I used to use norton antivirus but the subscriptions each year were way too expensive to justify all the crap on the computer. I now have one called avast! and my laptop runs McAffe.

Im toying with the idea to just rid myself of them both and buy an apple like i was going to do in the first place. That way there isnt any need for antivirus

Both are good. Ad aware scans files and folders and spybot actually seeks out known spyware files/programs/registries.

Or you could just upgrade to Vista!!

Peacom Trojan is just a spam mailer that emails (forwards it's self) to all of your contacts and adds a spam portal to your email program.

If your system is shutting down during a scan you possibly have a hardware (tired hard drive perhaps?) issue not a software one.

Rossco's right- sounds like your power supply is dieing, probably o/heating with high cpu load the scan is making. btw I use AVG for my antivir- its free and works.

Hahaha, I love sarcasm!! "Vista won't have viruses like every previous version of Windows"...don't believe the hype .

Peacomm may be causing the reboots according to the Symantec website.

If its still a problem, try just scanning just the Windows folder by itself, might get it before it reboots. Then do a full scan.

In regards to the shutting down, my computer just had a virus(trojan) and it did the same thing when i tried to run adaware. As soon as the virus was cleaned, it stopped. So i would think it is to do with the virus.

Not sure whether this will make a difference but worth a try.

Boot up in "safe mode" by hitting the F8 key just after the post screen, then try the antivirus again.

an idea 4 the future,
when ever u download sumthing, its usually in a .zip (or .rar if u got it), anyways, before u extract it, go 2 www.virustotal.com and scan it, do it 2 everything i download, can never be 2 safe.
