First boat project

Hi guys iv got a small tinnie (11ft Savage Gull 340) and it's been sitting in the back yard for a fair few months now.

The motor isnt working at the moment (getting it loked at very soon) so at the moment it's doing nothing.

Iv decided to get off my butt and do something about it.
Im going to be using my boat around a sheltered bay (corio bay/geelong water front) along rock walls, warfs and flats so i want to make it a small Bream boat with a front casting platform and a leccy up front. Im not looking at getting technical with live wells ect just a simple boat to motor around close to shore in.

Can you please make any suggestions ect on types of wood, do's and donts, cost and all the stuff i should really find out before i start the project
Heres a pic off the boat
Thanks guys!

chears, Nathan

Dead easy job, I've got the exact same sized boat I use for the Super Punt (Electric only) series. Screwed on an electric thanks to Minn Kota and busted in a casting deck and a deckchair and it's great to fish from.

Grab a big sheet of Marine or Exterior ply. Probably cost you around $50-$70. Make a template or measure it up and chop the sucker to fit. With my deck, I made small stopper strips of timber going vertically at each end of the deck so it sits in place over the thwart seats without moving. OR you could just screw it in, my reason for making the timber stoppers was due to maintenance (aka taking beer cans out from under it ;-) and ease of taking the deck off when needed. Next thing to do is cover the deck with OVERLAPPING carpet on ALL sides so incase your cut out job was a little..umm...rough, it looks perfect after the carpet goes on top and also the timber wont rub against the gunnels. Carpet will probably cost you $30-$50? Oh and if you’re going to make forward and aft decks maybe put some hatches in for storage.

Before I made the deck, I painted the hull. Acid washed the hull, threw some Etch Primer on it, then some Epoxy Enamel paint and it came up rather well. Think the painting products came to around $50.

My job was a BASIC fit out. With some time and effort and a boat that size you can make a killer little setup without too much hassle OR cost.

With that size boat if you get the biggest sheet of ply you’ll probably find it’ll be enough for the aft and forward decks (well the sheet I got did).

Good thing about the older boats like that is you can make a few mistakes and not let it worry you. Just keep sawing and BASHING things to fit till you get it right ;-) Then wak it in the pool and take the dogs for a spin.

Let me know how you go..

Hey Nath

First thing you gotta do is get rid of that DohDohDoh extinguisher hidden under the bow. As you may be aware they contain CFC's and the use of which is now illegal (except in some motor sports I believe). Drop it off at your local fire station and they will dispose of it correctly (we do over here in WA anyway). And as for the rest of you that may have one tucked away in the boat/caravan/shed etc do the right thing and dispose of in the correct manner.

Don't be tempted to discharge it either as;
1. It will damage the ozone
2. It is illegal and carries substantial penalties if you are caught 3. There are extremely toxic chemicals that are discharged from them.

I know that a majority of people that will read this will do the right thing

Cheers

thanks guys!
Trouty im not so sure on whats wrong with the OB. oNE DAY IT WAS WORKING PERFECT (STARTED SECOND PULL) then then next you know it wont go. It starts out of water some times but when you put it in water and start it (when u can manage to get it going) you put it in gear and it stalls
We took it to Moolap marine and the guy said it had no compression but im not sure becasue it has always been easy to start and with no compression it should start at all.
Sorry if i confused anyone im running late for school

Any idea on how much a foot control leccy will set me back (new or second hand)?????
The fresh water modals are cheaper?!? and i hear you can still use them in the salt but you have to coat them with something every so often?!
thanks guys!

It is best to get marine carpet that way it wont rot and smell, one tip is not to get the light grey as is gets dirty really easily. it cost around $40 per meter

i think the ply that i used is was 3 ply, its 9mm thick, if you dont get marine ply then you will have to coat it in a varnish of some sort to prevent the wood from rotting. it cost about $30 for a sheet.

When attaching the carpet to the ply use a contact adhesive such as Kwik Grip.

Have you thought about getting a transom mount motor and mounting it on the bow? they are about half the price of the a bow mount.

Doing the same thing at the moment nath, interested whats guys have to say. Hard to imagine it costing you more than $150 to put a lil floor and casting deck in there.
Second hand bow mount leccy in the endura ( freshwater series ) will set you back around $250 odd for a 40lb thurst model. Thats all your boat will need i reckon?
Dont quote me on the price though.
