Hey was just wondering what everyones gear maintanence routine is after use thought we could post it up so I can see if I'm doing something wrong or if there's a better way cheers
reel, drag done up tight, run a trickle of warm water on braid to dislodge some salt, wiped down with a damp warm cloth, one small drop of oil on each accessable bearings from daiwa needle oiler every so often I use car polish and polish paint seem to keep it pretty tiptop rod- washes down with warm soapy water ( meguairs soft wash ) special attention to guides left to dry, reel feet wiped with inox, rod polished with meguairs polish every so often, maybe excessive but I try to look after it am I doing wrong?? Cheers for any help! |

Inox....
Inox....... then............ ![]() Inox (after a gentle rinse off) My gear still looks and functions like the day I bought it. |

I never put my reel under water. I take the spool off, lock the drag and dunk a towel in really hot water, wipe the salt off. Add some Quantam hot sauce, put the spool back on. Sometimes il put some hot sauce in the handle bearing then i give the whole thing except the line a light spray of inox. Once every two years a full service by a tackle shop doesnt hurt

Rinsing your reels is ok and good practice so long as you have your drag done up when doing so and also don't spray a jet of water onto your reels. Water can penetrate every nook and cranny and cause heartache later, so that's why i don't use a hose or the tap. Fill a sink up with warm soapy water and squeeze the water from a cloth or sponge over your reels. Make sure you take the handle and spool off and give them and the reel a good dry after wards. I use paper towel. I do this after every outing and then i give them a light spray and wipe with Inox and then stow them. Also a good service from a tackle store as Crayfish mentioned is good, although if your a handy man you can do this yourself. If you don't know your way around the inside of a reel do even attempt it. Some reels can be a real pain to get back together. Its best to take the to a tackle store. But really a good rinse and coat with Inox is all your reel needs after a fish to last a lifetime imo.
As for rods just a hose off and dry is sufficient. If you have dirty cork grips Metho will bring them back to as new. Just wet a cloth with metho and scrub the cork, it works a treat!

Also...
And guys remember if your reel has alot of salt on it or you have been fishing in heavy spray, worm or cold water will not break down salt so it comes off your reel. Use warm-hot water to break it down
