More questions on Gulp - lure or bait?
I'm heading for Tasmania in 2 days and I hope to catch big trout while I'm there. I was going through the Fisheries website and if you think Vic fishing licenses are expensive, you should check out Tassie's inland license costs and the basic cost only allows you to use one rod and you have to pay extra for the second rod.
Back to the main topic, there are waters there designated as fly only or lures or all methods. For lure only waters, the following rule applies: You may not have possession of any bait or lure that is not wholly artificial at any water where the use of bait is prohibited. So, where do the Gulps sit in relation to this rule? |

Id suggest they'll come under artificial.

If they set off the sniffer dogs, I'd be inclined to think otherwise.

Why are they more expencive in Tas, compared to NSW?? Thats easy, because your first sentance has a very good chance of actually happening here.
The amount of quality water available to you, makes the price seem very reasonable to me. And Gulps are legal in any artificial only waters. Good luck on your trip, Hope you get that fish of a lifetime Cheers Baldy

I have only heard of one lure being banned and that is those food source plastics. They got banned from a comp in the US somewhere.
Make sure you take the digi with you. I want to see plenty of pic's. Ben |

I was planning to use those Gulp sandworms for bream in Derwent River.
For the trout I'll first attempt to get them on dry fly, if initial attempts fail, then the wet fly under a dry. If it fails yet again, I'll go the spin rod with soft plastics or hardbodies. If that still doesn't work, I'll try the celtas for half an hour. Getting desperate, I might just have to dig for worms . Tossing between some smallish rivers 30 minutes from Launceston or Arthurs Lake 90 minutes away. I'll definitely have the digi with me. Whatever i get on the 5-weight will receive a snapshot, even if its only a baby... Is 5-weight too light there? |

Well, they're not NZ size trout, but still goodies, as far as I have seen. 5 weight should be okay unless it gets windy, or you have to use quite large flies.
As for those stonker pony bream, leave that 5 wt in the car!!! |

Yeah, I just called a fly shop there and they suggested that the 5 weight would be ok in rivers but not the lake so I'm taking the 6 weight instead. Pony bream!! Whooooweee! I hope to get a few in Hobart...

While you're at it you might want to try out these new lures by "Breado's". The 4 inch "Doughy" is a stand out in the range. Works exceptionally well while dead sticking. About $2 a loaf - (sorry) Packet and about 20 lures in each. Just take off the protective outer crust and hand roll to any shape you like

Lol - Crusher.
These lures have been around for centuries. But In 1928 - Otto Frederick Rohwedder invented a machine that sliced and wrapped the "Lure Log" to prevent the sliced lures from going stale. The handy packaging and assured freshness, meant lure tossers everywhere rejoiced. And in 1929 The Breado's Lure company was born - The rest is history Last edited by yellow door 1; 14-11-2005 at 03:28 AM. |

Mmmmmmm...cheese 'n' bacon...*drool sound*
Seriously though, and I've had this chat with CHUNQX before, if you take a plastic and put tuna oil on it, is it still artificial? The "100% natural ingredients" in Gulps aren't listed, so who knows what they are. The minnows smell very fishy (more than the "plastic" smell of a lot of plastics), can anyone say there's no fish by-products in/on them? Anyway to answer the question, if it looks artificial to a fisheries inspector, what the difference? |
