Question Fuel how much needed on a bream type boat?

How many fuel tanks do you all generally have aboard, my tank currently is 25 litres which doesn't seem like it would be enough for a day fishing out on the harbour and surrounds.

I did use it on Sunday and didnt seem to get that much range out of it.

Do you all generally carry more than one tank on board?
How much fuel do you think is adequate for a day out on the water for somewhere like Sydney Harbour, would another 25 ltr tank suffice?

I have a stessl edgtracker 435 tourny

First up I will state that I don't have nor have I ever owned a boat.

I recently did the Swan Night Session comp and went out with Dror on his Full Boar, I was suprised at how little time the outboard was actually used.

We left the start travelled maybe 15 minutes then cut the motor and dropped the leccy for the next hour maybe 2 ....
I think we changed spots twice more both times the outboard was used for no more than 15minutes and it was back to the leccy. Then of course for the run home. Total time at a guess 1 hour.

The point I'm trying to make is, the way it seems to me with bream comps is you hardly use the outboard and spend most of your time running the leccy. I'd be suprised if he used half the tank ...

How big is your outboard? That obviously will affect consumption. What Becker said is spot on. The guys at Albany used 10 litres of less per day across to the Kalgan/Hay.

Cheers

On a usual comp over here I use about 20 litres total. I have a 50hp Yam 4 stroke. Now there is one exception to this.. Bloody Mandurah. I usually go through 30 litres there because of the long flat out run across the Peel Estuary and the fact that I tend to fish at least 10k's up stream in the Murray.

Its going to be dependant on what motor you have. 2 strokes (except perhaps the ETec's like Dror's) will always use more juice.

Also the manner that you use the engine is a big factor as well. If you are quick on the throttle you will suck more etc..

Monk, Becker is right in what he said. Most trips over here are relatively short. However Sydney harbour is a lot bigger than the Swan river over here in the west. I carry 75 litres on my boat but am running a 90hp E-tec. This motor is very ecconomical so I rarely use more than about 25 litres on a day. It really depends on what size and type of motor you have and how far you would be likely to travel on a given day. I would assume that your boat would have somewhere around 40hp. If it is a 4 stroke or one of the new generation injected 2 strokes you could probably get away with the one 25 litre tank. However if it is a carby 2 stroke it would probably be a better idea to have two 25 litre tanks on board. Either way it is always better to have too much fuel than not enough, within reason. It doesn`t hurt to have a 10 lt jerry can packed in the boat somewhere just in case and make sure that unlike me you try to keep the tanks topped up every time you go out just incase you travel a bit further than expected. Hopefully you will get some replies from some of the guys over there who are running a similar setup to yours.

Cheers, Dror

With a 50hp 2 stroke and given the size of Sydney harbour I would definitely have a second tank on board.
My 2cents worth.

Cheers, Dror

We have a 2 stroke 50hp on a 5m f/b runabout. A trip across from Novara boat ramp up the Murray 10km (to the Pinjarra 15km post) and back (about 30km round trip I guess) and I will chew through at least 25 litres. 20km of this distance is at 5 knots. Obviously in the open water I belt along at 30knots. Hence I carry a second tank. The fifty is about 10 years old (2 cyl).

HTH

435 HORNET

I only used 20 litres all up in Albany for the two days.
12 on Saturday went up the Kalgan
8 on Sunday fished the flats in front of the Kalgan.
50hp two stroke oil injected.
Only used this amount because I was flat out up and back to weigh in.
