Anyone notice that...a year ago bream were supposed to be non-lure takers, and it was considered supposed to be pretty hard work landing these things on hardbodies.

But then the potential of soft plastics hadnt really been fully realised back. It was only after people started using sp's that bream lure fishing really boomed.

But now it seems we're back into the hardbody phase again, after that comp where a number of breammaster guys admitted being stubborn with the soft plastics when they should have switched over to hb's.

But now, everyone is catching bream regularly with these hardbodies. My question is, what has changed between now and back then? Why are people being consistently more succesful using hardbodies now than before?

Does anyone see what I'm getting? Or it could just be that now the breammers are coming out into the open thru means such as this site.

Until I joined the Saltwater Flyrodders & got help from the guy's there I didn't go chasing them as I looked on river fishing as boring and fishless.
The silly part is I live in the hills and used to drive miles to get to the ocean.
I think the internet can take some credit for the speed all these new styles of fishing are taking the world by storm.

Like anyhting, I think there are a few who use one more than another. I've always been a HB man and have been keen to show a few the ways of 'HB'

I know a lot of guys who started Bream fishing and would only use softs. I remember how cautious Richo was when we started fishing together. Took him down to the Swan Trust jetty and convinced him to try a firefin he had.

BANG, one very happy and very convinced new HB man.

As I've said b4, whether you use one or the other, you have to be flexible.

Maybe a very small part of it is due to a fishing fashion statement, just like clogs, bell bottom pants, poncho's, long hair, short hair etc.

I don't know if a lot is "new" in fishing even soft plastics.

Its great for tackle shop owners and manufacturers aswell there is always a market for a "re-invented" fishing technique.

One other factor that may play a small part is the widening mentality of catch & release, IMO lures don't catch as many fish or as regulary as does well presented bait picked for a specific species and fished with finesse. But that is not a problem as your not "meat fishing".

The opinion is often bantered around that a fish caught on a lure is worth 10 caught on bait.

Maybe we are finally forgeting about cricket match scores of dead fish in the boat caught on bait and concentrating on a finesse way of fishing with lures, more stealth, more expenditure, more time and ultimately more enjoyable and satisfying.

It's been my experience here that we will often outfish baiters 2 or 3 to one.

Its a bit of a seasonable thing as well I think, hards are just more productive at the moment. Come winter I reckon the Softs will be working a treat again. Not sure what i`ll do then. Another pkt of everything

I'm jealous of you mate

I LOVE HB's and SP's with a passion but there is no comparison for me, that is, when compared to using bait.

Now with your statement I know that I must be doing something wrong, I can and do catch bream on SP's regulary but on HB's there a bit few and far between and for every bream I catch on either HB's or SP's I reckon I would get 5-7 flathead.

I could just about book a Ansett flight and come to W.A tommorrow, I would love to fish beside some of you guys and likewise I wish some of you blokes could fish here.

How interesting would that be ?

Maybe breamming hasn't changed much. Just that now it is becoming more popular and peoples attitudes are changing. Your right about the 1 fish on a lure = 10 (bait) fish though. There is always a special something with a fish taken on a lure. Even if it is a flathead...


I also find that you can catch more on bait, but then again my skill with lures is zero and doesnt compare with my bait saoking experiences. Just wait till the bream come back down here again

I think our last tourmament is a good example. Over 200 fish in 2 days. I'd like to see bait fishos do as well.
