Deep cycle batteries Talk

Hi all I’m after some info on what 12 volt deep cycle battery to get for a new tiller steer minn kota I’m picking up in a few days.

I would first like to say that I know DIDLY SQUAT about Batteries and all this technical mumbo jumbo (I’m willing to learn though ) so if you have any help for me could you please keep it as clear as possible.

I’m not fussed on brand names I just want some info on some good reliable non-bank-draining batteries.

I would also like some help on connections ect.


Ill be doing a search through old threads to but any new or un covered info would be great

You will want to get at least an 80 amp/hour battery but I would recommend getting 105 amp/hour at least.

The minn kota we have uses about 40 amps at full speed an hour. So you can get about 3 hours out of a fully charged battery at constant full speed.

You can get sealed cell batteries that wont leak but these are expensive so just get a good battery box that seals the battery.

You have to remember that these batteries are heavy and should be set somewhere in your boat that it wont affect your stability.

The minn kota we got just had a postive and a negative cable that we just screw through the battery terminals.

Remember to get a good battery charger as cheap ones will not fully charge deep cell batteries and always check the level of the liquid inside the battery when you charge it.

As well ask about a warranty on the battery you buy.

I too will be getting a battery soon and i am going to get a trojan 130 amp hour model from the 12 volt shop in perth.

Don uses these and reckons they are pretty good. It should keep me going through an 8hr session with just the leccy but i will have to fish it until its flat to prove this.

I'm currently using a delco from work and i did a 6 hr session on sunday with onlly the leccy as propulsion. Along with the livewell pump, the battery indicated it needed no charge when i got home.

I think the amp draw thing isnt right as some models have the maximiser feature which gives up to five times the running time on a battery charge.

I just got a new Delkor DC31 (100amp/hour) to run my Riptide and one of my sounders, it's brilliant! I can use the leccy for 3 days straight without showing any reduction in the battery charge, it tops up with my solar charger very quickly too.

how do you guys measure the battery charge?

I mean if swoffa is constantly charging his batts via solar power i can understand ... but a 6 hr session without drawing any battery juice whatsoever is unbelievable...... ??? Hence my query.

The trojan are the top of the range lead acid deep cycles.... they are about twice as much as a "korean" made delkor if i am not wrong ....

You can get minn kota battery charge meters from BM.

I think the trojans are aroound the $250 mark. Getting it next friday and will charge it straight away to use it the next day.

Should be able to fish a couple of days from what i can gather.
