g'day im using fireline about 6lb what leader should i be using?

Hi jamieong,

Mono is ok. Many people use flurocarbon.

Have the leader no longer than the length of your rod!!! (You don't want the know going onto your reel)

just use what ever leader lengh suits you best
every one has there own opinion on what is the best lenght to use.
some people say 50cm, others say 3m and others say anywhere in between that
i personaly tie on a leader about just over rod lengh (aprox 2m-2.5m) i dont measure precicely because it doesnt really matter if your leader is 10cm too long or two short
but sometimes and im lazy i use a leader that has been cut down alot dues to tying many knots and cutting the line etc, and i end up using a leader as short as 30cm sometimes and it still works fine

I would say that with 6 pound fireline I would probably suggest you want at least 8 pound leader because fireline always breaks well over its stated strength.
Depending on the situation 8,10,12, or 14 pound leader and I would use any of the flurocarbon leaders (they are all pretty good with some pros and cons the biggest being price) or if you want mono the berkley vanish is pretty good (they also sell vanish leader but the straight mono is a good price comprimise).

I use 4 lb Vanish and works very well for me until I hit a snag, then I worry about losing the whole leader though I must say after using the Improved Albright knot, I've had a better percentage of losing only jigheads and not the whole leader. I don't mind losing the leader. Its the retying time that gets to me.
Lengthwise, rod's length or slightly more. That's because Fireline is quite visible and sometimes if your leader's too short, they might not see the leader (especially fluoro) but when the jig sinks past the length of the leader the fireline then becomes visible to fish holding further up the water column and spook because of that. That mihgt be a factor as you're jigging the lure up and down and you don't want them to see anything suspicious. Bream are spooky enough as they are even with 4 lb Vanish....

Can i ask what type of fish you are targeting?
If you are going for bream id then look at the water and see what the colour and clarity is like.
Clear water that you can almost see the bottom of, i tend to fish a light leader nothing more than 5lb.
On the other hand if your fishing dirty water or racks id be using anything from 6lb to 12lb leaders.

I use 2mtrs of 8lb mono for leader.
I use a double uni to join the 2 lines together.
Go here The uni knot system if you need instructions on how to tie the knot.

i think it depends on what lures ur using personally and what stucture you fish.

I found casting on the flats at walpole very damaging to my 'large lure' collection. with a two metre leader and a strange shad or static shad( or n e other heavier lure) had so much carry that if my knot caught a guide it would just cast off at the very well tied albright knot. I know what u's are thinking, 'but the knot couldnt have been that strong' or ' the excess line must'nt have been trimmed back enough' but i swear and i dont know how it kept happenning i kept casting off large lures. i also didnt have heavy line to creat a large knot. As there was no structure on the flats i found a 30-40cm leader fine as it didn't need to come through my guides... i was a slow learner that holiday but when i shorted the leader i had no more cast offs.

When i paddled back into the river to fish the snags i found the longer leader fine on the light jigheads, but i still think... what if my knot is still catching on the guides and effecting the vital cast distance of minute jigheads.

are you tying your albright to a bimini twist? I do and have no trouble landing jewies and snapper using larger lures.

on my 6lb setup i use 10lb scientific angler fluorocarbon, if its a bit more open i go back to 7lb mamoi, hth

i dont think vanish is a mono even the 250metre spools cos it says on the box thats its a fluorocarbon i heard from somewhere but that it has a mono core and is coated in a flourocarbon but im probalby wrong

I try and have the leader long enough to get 1 or 2 wraps onto the reel, thats to start the day anyway. I like to this because there is no strain placed on the joining knot when casting.....

Thats what I heard about Yamatoyo, but its still first cab off the rank for me. Plenty of 6lb and 6lb only, I love the crap.
