picking your brains
Hi actually deacons dad here,i was wondering about different types of retrieves,i seem to have different results in different systems with different types of retrieves,i.e. in the kalgan i have caught all my fish with a slow ret maybe a couple of cranks then let the h/b sit or float up,and then bang allways get hit when the h/b is still, nanarup the same, however when i go to the hay the fish refuse to take the lure like that,i have to make the h/b go crazy which in turn seems to send the fish crazy, anyone else have similar exp,or am i just dreaming,do you all stick to one type of ret,or do you have a variety for diff places, sorry this is so long its all new to me?

G'day
I have found the same. Using the same hardbody, A slow retrieve works here, doesnt work there. Straight/trolling retrieve works there but not here. It has been consistent aswell meaning it doesnt seem to be a seasonal thing. I mainly use hardbodys but at one place I rarely get a fish on a hardbody but they savage atomic grubs. |

Hi Deacons Dad!
Were you the guys who came down for the weigh in at Torbay? Anyway the answer your question is the million dollar question to breamer's really. Bream in one system are different to those in the next system no matter how close they may be and you will find that even bream in the same system, say on the flats, will act different to other beam in the same system, say upriver in the snags. All of this will differ of course depending on the time of year. Bream can be caught on just about any lure on any retrieve, the key really is working out what they will take on that day. I used to sit down and theorise for hours about why they do this and why they do that. I say this because it’s a good idea not to get “locked” into thinking bream will take a lure on a certain type of retrieve etc. I used to race speedway and it's sort of the same thing, the track is different every time you race, the guy who gets his setup to match the conditions first is usually the guy who wins the night. Try not to use the same old lure all the time, a lot of breamers do this and I know it’s hard to put down a lure that you know works. However the more bream you catch on different lures the better. After a certain period of time you will have say 30 lures you have caught bream on instead on just a handful. This does two things, one it gives you more confidence because if “good ol faithful” isn’t working it doesn’t matter cause you know you can catch on lots of other lures. And two, you will see how bream take a crab imitation soft plastics WAY differently to the way they take a stick bait or say a hb. In the end there is no substitute for time on the water and experience will give you the wisdom to know what sort of retrieve to use. So my advice is, try all different types and styles, but the golden rule is, if your not catching change what you are doing untill you do. |
