Help needed (deck hatches)

Guys i have got my casting decks in h boat but i would like to put in some hatches so it makes it easier to store gear under the decks.
I dont want to put in aluminuim suports ect so i have come up with this idea.

I am looking at putting in a wooden frame around the bottom of the hatch with a 1inch lip so that it stops the hatch from falling through (i want to be able to step on it).

I would just like to run the idea through with you guys so that i dont go stuffing anything up so any comments and tips would be great.

I used ally flat bar pop rivetted thru the timber into the ally then covered with carpet so you cant see the rivets. I used rivets with extra large heads so they wont pull thru the timber.
