Strange hits

I went out early today to toss some hard bodies around the snags in Pumicestone Passage then later around some pontoons. When I first kicked off before sunrise I was using a Snap Shad & getting lots of hits but only hooked a couple. I reckon I had 13 or 14 hits for 2 hookups & both on the belly hook. I was checking hook points etc etc & couldn't work it out so I put it down to small fish even though they felt solid on the hit. I moved into the creek just as the sun came out & I had the same thing happening. Near the top of the tide the water became very clear & I could see what was happening. The fish were getting under the lure as it landed & when I started to move it they were biting the bib I saw it time & time again they were hitting the head / bib area. As the sun got higher & I got a bit further up it was just normal stuff get a strike hook up no worries & the fish were hitting the tail area. I have never seen this happen before. The only thing I can think off is that the light was reflecting of the bib in a way they liked Any thoughts guys & gals this is a new one on me

I was fishing with Rob last weekend and he was having a similar problem, getting plenty of good hits but not conecting, he said that they may be hitting the bib.
He went on to say that the clear bib can look a bit like a prawn or bit of bait that the lure is chasing.

Could be an answer.

I can't really explain it myself. The reflection off the bib may be " a bit out there with the fairies" but its all I could come up with. I went in tight & close to my favorite pontoon so I could see really clearly & I was only about 5 metres away in crystal clear water. The thing that got me was the way things went back to "normal" when the sun was up a bit more. The end couple inches of my trace had nicks & crush marks from the bites as well. I only wish I had taken a pic of the lure but unfortunately I had to cast at the bridge pylons & good old Mr Jack smashed me. Say no more.

I've had the same thing happen even to the extent of the Bream peeling a foot or two of line off before letting go of the bib, I've got lures with real good teeth marks in the bib. It makes you think at the right time they'll have a go at near anything you drag past them.

That makes a lot of sense :-) and is as good an explanation as any i've seen.

Yeah the reflection idea is on the spot.
With bonito and tailor, we fish nilsmaters and the bibs reflect light in a weird way in the early morning. We find fish are hitting the bib and not the body.
I'd say that the reflection must get them going in some weird way!
First i've heard of it on bream though!
