When you hear folk talk about reels having a 2.5 or a 4.5 kg drag, does that mean that when you tighten the drag right up thats the max it will strip or does it mean something else ? and how do you know what your reel has because at the moment i use a daiwa luguna 1500 and have no idea what drag rating this reel has, could any one enlighten me ?.

Hi Cagney. I found a pretty good explanation of the whole idea of setting and understnading drag. its from the "getting started" section of the Breammaster site (the second button from the left at the top of the screen.):
Most experts will advise a drag setting of about 75% - 80% of your lines breaking strain, check this by hooking a cheap fishing scale on the end of your line and get the missus to hold on to it and watch the reading. Pull on the rod and adjust your drag until it lets go at around the 75% - 80% mark (i.e.. drag releases at around 3lb on the scale if your using 4lb line).

Thanks Fishnut,i understand the bit about 2/3 drag setting's,what i was wondering is when someone say's i bought the daiwa luvias because of the 4 kg drag does that mean that some tournament grade reels have special drags on them ?

Drag ratings?
We were discussing this today; and while Mitch and I agreed that we rated Ev in drag, it's Dave that really comes up nice in a dress.

Chris i cant help it if your sister insists on stealing my clothes afterwards...its either grab one of her dresses or walk around naked, and with you in the room next to us, I'll take the former...
And ona more serious note, the drag people refer to when talking about a reel is the max drag pressure the reel can apply effectively. Doesnt relly matter for breamin, our lines normally break at around 2 or 3 kilo anyway! Dave |

Hahahah ok I'll pay that Duncs and Dave.
And yeah I'm with Duncs, lock the b@stard up (Dave and the drag on your reel). You'll be surprised when you lock your drag and fish still take line.
