Super spinner
Have been looking at the super spinners for a while now, with attention mainly on the Biomaster SW (not so super spinner, but still good), Saragosa SW, twinpower, Catalina and the post 2010 saltigas.
Missed a saltiga expedition (original blue one) used once with jerry brown, by about 5 minutes yd. It was $700. However a 2008 Stella 18000 has come up near me, with avanti casting x8. Just wondering is this way, way, way to big for jigging/live baiting for kings/sambos, and trolling for tuna? Not for the overkill as I know it will winch a tuna, but for its weight? Have seen expo 2014's and they don't seem that huge? What reel would the Stella be equal to in daiwa, and what are the pros and cons of buying the reel; booth from the fact it's second hand, and in comparison to a saltiga? Also, if anyone has an offer of a 8000+ shims or a 5000+ daiwa of any of the above models looking to offload please shoot an offer. Cheers, Jack. Last edited by Breambo1; 04-05-2015 at 05:01 AM. |

I am sure many would disagree however having owned the stella 08 the Teben SEA and the Saltiga expidition. I rate the saltiga expidition in another class of reel above the stella 08 and i consider the TEBEN SEA to be the best value big spinner in the world, after a drag upgrade it is scarily close to the stella. Would i buy another TEBEN ? no i wouldnt. Reason being its lack of saltwater resistance. I havent discussed the stella sw because when i got one i sold it within a week it is completely inferior to the stella 08. Which i must add does not make it a bad reel it still accounts for monstorous fish around the world but for me it was a step backward for shimano. I also consider the Catalina superior to the stella sw and even the same or superior to the stella 08. It certainly is more free spinning then the stella 08 and has identical drag to the expidition. If you can score a second hand expidition you wont be dissapointed problem is they are super rare. Mine are treated like small investments and i intend to have them for many many years. I do see stella 08's come up on facebook fishing buy and sell moderately often. Once again i dont think you would be dissapointed at all if the reel were to be a dud it would be the previous owner and not the reel. The part where it gets tricky is at 664 dollars a brand new catalina plus 100 dollars on the latest and greatest daiwa 12 saltiga braid is exactly around the price point of a second hand stella. Which would i go ? Catalina. No worrying about past life and it's treatment No worrying about warranty transfer or expiration No worrying about the life of the braid and if it has been abused When and if i buy another super spinner if daiwa still have an expidition and catalina and they are still so very similar i would without hesitation buy a catalina even after the expidition being the best reel i have ever owned. It isnt $600 better then the catalina not even close. TL;DR Get a JDM Catalina |

Mate. I'm looking at a 5000 Catalina on Digitaka for $600 posted. What size is the 5000 in comparison to a shims! I know I want around 10000 or so in shims. Is that the catalina 5000 size? Wondering what you recon it could take maximum?

10000 Shimano is slightly bigger than a Daiwa 5000 and will hold more line than the 5000. The 5000 Daiwa is inbetween the Shimano 8000 & 10000

That is with 12 strand braid, 8 strand braid is roughly 60lb and of course 400m will fit on the spool. |
