Horizontal rod storage

Gday guys.

I'm keen to see what you use for your horizontal rod storage in your boat (under gunnels) I'm chasing a couple of horizontal holders that you can actually place a rigged up rod in each section without mass tangles. All the ones I have seen have the holders too close together making the reel touch the next rod down.

Despite it being the best option I won't have room for a rod locker. Ultimately it would be nice to find a 5 slot rod holder with decent spacings and of good build quality.

Here's a link to what is currently in the boat. The previous owner cut up one of these things and put individuals under the gunnels really roughly. Along with it being a shitty job I also find the securing Velcro to be a real pita

Go see someone like Mcquarrie for something nice in stainless? I prefer vertical combing racks in the boat, plus the heavy rods with gimbal fittings are locked in and don't bang around which is good offshore. Then again I don't really cast lures out of the boat, when I do spare rods are in the launchers out of the way anyway

If you have a hole saw and some wood and PVC pipe - the possibilities are endless

I used to fish 4 up in my boat alot so I had a few holders.

You can rig up vertical rocket launchers and dot them around the boat. Or if you really want under gunnel storage you can just custom cut the racks to suit your needs.

All these styles would be a piece of piss to make out of wood or those plastic cutting boards.

...you can measure them up so they perfectly fit your boat - a couple of squirts with a hole saw - and cut down to the hole with a normal saw - or if you have a Jig-saw - even easier

I like that last style you posted larry. Maybe hand made is the way to go. Only way I'll make full use out of my space.

Will have to break out Ye old jigsaw over the winter and have a crack.

Here's what I made. Six rod locker made from aluminium plate covered with carpet. Hinged so it can open when the passenger seat is in place. One nylon cutting board, half of a Berkley rod holder and some elastic loops. Reels are protected in neoprene covers (free with some Pfluegers), rods rigged and protected with Hurricane Rod Gloves. Split butt section protected with plastic tubing which I just leave in place when in use. If just limited to four rods the reel covers aren't needed.

Yeah thats the style I made - I liked the idea of being able to quickly just drop the rods in and out - without having to slot them in place. But my rods and reels at the time could take a hiding. Todays gear is a little more fragile.

I'd still have no problem using that style with my breaming gear - but I'm sure others would prefer something that held the rods in place so they wouldnt rattle around and bang into stuff while going through chop

Yeah cobby I love combing racks and rocket launchers. But on a small boat the vertical storage I have is shite and being centre console there's no Bimini to mount rocket launchers to get them out of the way.

95% of the work in my boat is lure work so under gunnels works well. When I do take the heavier gear they can sit in the many flush mount rod holders on the boat.

Love the carpeted cover for the rods and reel - mine used to get saturated with spray nearly every time we went out
