running dry
Quick question.
I'm fitting my Minn Kota to a borrowed boat (until mine is up and running) and want to test it before heading up the coast this weekend. Is it allright to run the Elec motor out of water? I can't imagine it being a problem (for a short time) but I am unsure wether the the motor relies on the water for cooling. Any ideas.

As far as I know it's OK, just check you're Minn Kota destructions to make sure, but as it's a sealed unit you should be right.

Thanks Bear,
I've been through the handbook. The fittment and operation is covered in one page and provides only the barest minimum of info. The only caution in it relates to fingers. Funny really, most american products are covered with warnings, like "do not use hair drier under shower". Rea eally I'm surprised it doesn't have something like "placing motor in mouth may result in unintentional dental damage" or "do not use elec motor for emergency propulsion".

Hi Angry
I've got it somewhere in my Minn Kota stuff but can't find it anyway the Motor does rely on water to keep it cool as unlike other motors with windings it doesn't have any airflow. I suggest that you only run it in the dry for a few seconds to check that it has power. I do this to check speed settings, momentry switch and constant power. In total about 10-15 seconds. Play it safe and you won't have any problems. Last edited by madsurfe; 09-06-2004 at 11:21 PM. |
