Light kingfish spin combo

Now that I've got the Pinster and the Luvias 2506H is coming in the mail, I want to get myself a heavier spin outfit for Sydney kings and some tougher species. I have zero experience with these but so bloody keen.

Some lighter combos I've seen have been like 4000 reels and 5-10kg or even lighter rods.

I'm looking at maybe a Freams 4000 with some PE 2.5. Potentially 40lb. How does that sound? I've seen youtube clips of people using 80lb line and 100lb leaders fishing SP for kings with only 3-5lb rod and 3000 reel and landing them up to 73cm.

Which rod? Which reel? Which braid? Starting from scratch here.

$300 budget for rod and reel.

Not much point going to heavy on the braid with a Daiwa 4000 series reel in that price range due to the drag capacity.
Have a look at the Daiwa Lexa similar reel but alloy body and is a high speed reel, more suited to kingy lure speeds.

I bought a Salina 3 5000 high speed reel for $190 and a Salina 2 6-8kg rod on clearance for $80 and some 30lb tuff line xp braid for exactly this use and also use it for live baits. Probably not in the same class as some of the higher end Shimano and Daiwa's but a heap better than anything they have in that price range IMO. Certainly worth a look anyway.

The spool cap is 300m of PE 2.5, so it's more about that really. Also the leader will be heavy so I can hopefully survive their thrashing towards and around structure. I'll look at the Lexa though. Maybe Ballistic 4000?

Hadn't considered outside of the big two. Are the Salinas really that good?

Line lay is not as good as the big 2, and is a bit on the heavy side, but is a solid reel that has up to 15kg of drag (corbontex drag stack). For the coin, they're not too bad. Good value for money I think. Do a you tube search for Band of Brothers Salina 3, these guys put one through its paces on some solid fish.

It's an option then, I'll keep it in mind.

Otherwise I'm considering a 5000 Stradic FJ. Rod maybe a Tcurve Revolution Offshore 702 5-10kg

I can't provide much help on the topic as I've never caught a king, but what video did you see of people using 80lb line on a 3-5lb rod? If you could PM me a link that would be sweet.

Otherwise for a light outfit the t curve outfit you mentioned should do well I'd imagine, so long as you don't hook any beasts

My apologies, it was a 3-5kg rod. That was a typo. I'll send you the link when I can.

I'm on my phone - hopefully this link works. He discusses his gear right near the end of this clip.

Looks like he was actually using two outfits? He says he's using 80lb line whilst fishing, then at the end he says it's 40lb on a 2500 reel...maybe you guys can help me clear it up. Haha. Is that more of a snapper outfit?

If they aren't to big I'd probably go a 3-4000 Stradic FJ with a blue gomoku and pe 2 jigging braid from jap. A little over $300 at $350ish but perfect for a light combo with loads of balls. Have seen 30kg SB Tuna landed on this sized outfit. (Well, a 2500, not 3000!)

That sounds bloody awesome. How would the gomoku go flicking plastics?

I could get a Gomoku, spool my existing Caldia 2500SHA with PE 1.5 and try from there? How does that sound.

Or I spend more money and get the Stradic as well with PE 2 or 2.5

I've got the red one for my local area and it's killer. Not like you are flicking plastics that far, but yeah, gets them out plenty of distance for me. Best part is, they double as an everything rod because they are still so light. Amazing squidding rods because of such a slow taper. I pull barbs seldom now compared to before I had it.

You're laughing mate. Spool it up with 2-300m of pe 1.5 30lb and you'll kill most stuff. No need to buy new gear if what you have works is there? I'd rather go light and have a ball, while loosing a couple rather than drag them all in bar a few giants, which probably won't be stopped anyway unless you beef up a 5-6000... If you are losing a few to many then you can get something bigger, but may as well try save where you can and spend more on maybe upgrading the reel and putting on better line.
