Bent minnow questions
Hi
I'm going to start "bent minnowing" soon. I have three questions- 1. What retrieves do you use for bream/EPs? 2. What are some good colours to get? I've heard super wakasagi and the White ones are good. 3. Is it ok to use 8lb mono? I normally use 4lb fluoro but I don't want to lose lures. I also think mono will keep it on the surface. I'll be using the 76 for black bream, big trout, estuary perch and salmon. I also have a hurricane switch 66. The lures will be fitted with bream stingers from fishin.com.au Tim

Hey bud,
In my experience, finesse and subtlety is key in surface techniques for bream, yellowfin in particular. Anything too aggressive usually spooks them. With bent minnows, you're trying to imitate and wounded Garfish or other bait fish, fleeing predators. A retrieve that has the lure subtlety breaking the surface is the idea. I use micro poppers myself, and a subtle slow walk technique is always a winner for me. As for EP, if they're anything like their cousin, the Bass, you should just need to place the lure next to some structure, with a few twitches, and bang. Bass usually enjoy anything in my experience. Can't be too aggressive really. Hope it helps mate. |

for EP, use any bents up to 106mm but the best would be 86mm, what works retrieve and colour wise is location and day specific, just mix it up with surface/subsurface retrieves by lifting and lowering your rod, the odd line flick to make the lure jump vertically off the surface is always good to induce a strike. I use up to 15lb fluro with 86 bents but would not try that with Hurricanes. stick with fluro as it's more versitile than mono

I too was wondering WTF. Shows nothing of the retrieve.

For bream I use an initial erratic/aggressive action on the bents, usually for a little less then a meter then very long pauses and little twitches once you get their attention

Cast close up into structure. Two twitches and wait for it to surface, give it 2-3 seconds and then repeat.

I like to give it a solid drag to get it subsurface followed by a few twitches, then just let it float back to the surface and wait... repeat. My favorite colour is white (for the yellow fin).

Pink head is a personal favourite. The wakasagi colours are good too.
