rods on the deck stored

Just wondering if poeple have photos of their rods on the deck when traveling ie rigged and strapped down with say a rod buckle system. Reason I ask is i have been trawling the net both aus and us tornney boats trying to see pictures and havent seen many. Mainly rod lockers but not the decks.

I have been trying to work out some horizontal rod storage for my dory and without wasting a lot of space i have to rest the reel on the next rod etc - see the photo.

Question is do people just bunch the rods all together and chuck the strap over them and not worry about them? i know some with really high end gear prolly dont but then dunno myeslf.

Also im trying not to screw/bolt down anything to the old seat as the rods only need to be in this position till i get to the ramp from there they are put vertically in another rack. Also want to use the rest of the seat and not stand/trip on things.

cheers
ryan

Hi ryan
I used a rod buckle/strap thats retractable on my old explorer woork really well, I just put the rod butts together on front deck & strapped down was a nice solid set up.

I don't have any photos but I have mine reels overlapping rods in you photo.
Except that I have them in the Shimano neoprene reel bags to provide some protection. Well at least at the start of the day. I don't always put them back on between spots - unless its really bumpy or its a really long run.

I also added some of the clear vinyl tube to stick the tips in - to protect the most vunerable parts of the rods.

My rods don't go into vertical storage but stay lying down.

I don't like vertical storage - too easy to break rods under bridges or trees. My rods are always in the same area so I know not to step there.

I was trying to figure how to make a rack that held the reels up at about 45% so they were lying all over one another, but in the end decided it was more trouble than its worth.

I have mine over the other way with the reel handle on the deck, can get the next rod under each handle. will try to take a pic on the weekend. i sit a towel over the rods and an occy strap over the towel, stops them moving about.

I do similar to fishrunner.

I have a bungy cord on the front face of the seat so it doesn't get caught on anything and I can stretch it out to slip the rod butts underneath. The reels hang just off the front of the seat (in neoprene covers) and the top section of rod rests on the carpet of the front deck - I have a piece of black Velcro which I peel up to put the rods under as it sticks to the carpet well and you wont trip on it. No pics but if I remember I will get some on the weekend.

Coincidentally I have been researching this myself today as well. I'm after a pretty basic option with just two elastic straps that recess into a grommet when not in use.

Here's what I have found:

The Hobie pro angler have a grommet that I'm not sure if I have found the right part number. One of the Hobie yakkers might be able to confirm??

I have found a part for a Skeeter called 'Rod Staze'. For 2 delivered from the states was about $70. Yeah......na.

If I can confirm the Hobie details, I'll price them. I am only after the actual grommet, the elastic and hooks etc can be found commonly in hardware stores, upholsterer's and chandlerys.

Failing that, I'm looking into having them machined out of nylon or similar.

Cheers, Rhet

Check out the rob strap on my Hornet in the post a little down from the top. Brilliant piece of kit and I'll be getting the same for the tinny.

Wow thanks guys for your ideas!
J&K Middleton - thanks for the feedback. sounds like its strong enough to hold them all down and together.

crusty - hmm neoprene bags would be good but something else to go and get. Though im thinking that may be the solution to protecting the reels/rods whilst traveling from rubbing. A rack would be handy but im also thinking it would be quite an effort to work something out for it - plus i want something that removable. I'll keep thinking about this.

ratbags - towel is good. i have tried the rods with the handles down and i think your onto something. I think it will help at least get more on. (there are usually 5 rods - my mates 2 and im greedy and like to take 3 plus its my boat)

samt/fishrunner - I was thinking how velco could be used. i love it. Well i was digging around and found an arm band from an old ipod i think. im thinking it may work. (pic below)

Rhet - gromets would have been handy today. i just drilled a hole, filed it and then stuck the bungy cord through. if it cuts through ill think about it a bit more.

Bear - saw your picture and it sort of gave me a bit of inspiration. would love one of the buckles. did you get your from the states or aussie?

Anyways i have sort of sorted out a bit of a solution - at least it will work for now till i can sort something better. the rod bar in the centre is fold down. This is so i can transport the rods to and from the water. This is as a result of building a cast deck and where i used to lay the rods in the back up to the front seat now it wont work as the tips are now exposed above the sides of the boat. anyways pictures do a better job than my crappy typing.

hope these can be of some inspiration.
cheers
ryan

Ima sorry and ill let you finish...

But thats a epic idea in that tinnie! Neat and folds out of the way when not in use and a good shock absorbing effect in rough water.

Bought mine from Bass Pro with a few other things. One thought, a drop down/fold out leg on the back of your board would protect the rods from any bounce.
