Shimano vanquish 4000

Hi guys I was wondering if anybody had used one these.. I am looking for a reel that will handle decent sized palagic- long tails etc. are these as solid as a stella or twin power or certate??? Any thought would be awsome I had heard these were more of a finesse reel is that correct??

It is considered as a good finesse spinning reel mainly because of its light weight. Its lack of heft certainly does not mean its not solid built.

Having said that, I do not think it will be as solid or durable as a Stella - for example, as far as I know, Stella uses cold forged aluminium drive gear of the highest quality (gold in its tone) while Vanquish uses probably the second best that Shimano has to offer (silver in colour); the drive gear in a Stella is also slightly large in diameter compares to that of a Vanquish.

If I were you, I would put some emphasis on balancing the rod and reel combo and choose my reel accordingly - Vanquish is about 20 to 35 grams lighter than most other same sized reels.

But if you have already set your eyes on Vanquish, from what I have heard from Vanquish users (I do not own one myself but I know most Shimano reels pretty well), I do not think the reel will disappoint.

I wanted to put it on my lucky craft reaction tube or I also have dobyns which are both pretty light weight I was just worries a long tail or two might destroy the thing- mainly the gears and drag-
I was also looking at the new Daiwa brazino morethan that has just been released
I liked the look of the vanquish but just knew nothing about the reel

After all it is the second best light spinning reel Shimano has to offer. I would be surprised if the CF drive gear can be destroyed by some long tails. Drag is consumables when it comes to hard running pelagics isn't it?

I have seen Japanese fishos use Vanquish 4000 for hirasuzuki (Japanese black sea bass) and small/medium yellowtail kings and dorados.

Yeah I think you might have just sold me on it. I was going to get a runout stella fe but for the same money I can get the new morethan 3012h and for about $100 less I can get a 4000xg vanquish... So do I save $100 and get a vanquish or spend the extra and get a morethan 3012h??? Any thoughts?..

I don't think many people can comment on the new Morethan at this stage.

It is your call from here.

Mate thanks for your insight Doctor, yeah that's what I thought about the morethan and to be honest I don't think I would be disappointed with either if the truth be known- they are clearly two outstanding reels.- I was just a little nervous that the vanquish was more of a finesse reel that would enjoy the more brutal species but you have put me at ease with that

You are very welcome.

A friend of mine mainly uses his Stradic ci4 for spinning for northern longtail in the dry up here. Last time we fished together the reel was still fine and that was two seasons later. Cold forged drive gears are pretty strong (there are at least 3 grades of CF drive gears in Shimano spinning reels), used according to the reel's purpose and under the reel's limit, they are practically indestructible.

I've caught 6 large spangled emperor about 60cm+ and a 70cm large mouth nannygai on mine. Doubt I'd do it again, but reel is very capable for sure. The guys I was fishing with couldn't believe it, haha.
