a little quiet on the fly board

Thought I'd make a post here, been a while since anyone did. Took another keen local from down here (Augusta) on sunday to the Blackwood to see if we could get a mullet or two on fly.

Mullet weren't cooperating in their usual hotspot to berly up but we did manage a few bream on fly for our efforts. Came across an area that we hadn't paid much interest to in the past (an area hit pretty heavily near a boat ramp) and had a good afternoon. Most of the bream were small but this one went 1.18 kilos.

Nice fish mate.
I know of a couple of breamers who have been getting into some bream on fly in the swan of late...
I'm thinking of getting into it myself. It looks like awesome fun.

Catching bream like that on fly would give ya full waders!!!
sorry couldn't help myself. have you used many of muz wilson's flys over your way as they work a treat at home,supose it helps with him not far down the highway.what are your personal fav flies ?Have had great succes on hammerheads in chartease and pink and usd merri-minnow in black at night. after reading soewhere about foam flies might be time to play with some simple cricket pattens that last more than 2 fish

I haven't used Muz's excellent BMS series a great deal down where we are. I'm either fishing down pretty deep in the holes or if the bream are specifically feeding on something along the edges of the river we'll target them that way. Also haven't spent much time persuing right on top like you guys over east have been. No doubt under the right conditions that'll work but it's being in the right place at the right time. Many have talked about ant hatches over here and seeing bream take them off the top but don't know of anyone that has succeded out west (speak up if you have).

My favourite flies (the ones that worked on the weekend) would be... for deep down when the bream are nowhere to be seen would be any number of variations of a zonker minow pattern.

This one I just took off my rod that caught the fish in the above post. I usually tie them a little dressier (ie. gills etc) but you get the idea (pattern details just ask if wanted). We use this fly a lot back in my homeland (Canada) for steelhead. Gotta love rabbit fur.

We found good numbers of bream near a little creek. They are usually feeding on the little prawns we have down around now so used this fly (just my medicore version of a Bob Popiwitch shrimp). That fly has also produced pretty well on smallish (5-6 kilo) mulloway from around Mandurah the last couple of years.

must admit that latly i have been playing up near the surface as the crickets have been a good option as a weed bank that is normaly very shallow/nearly exposed has been well under water as the mouth is blocked and raised the water level by about 1.3 meters,hence bms's and cricket and mudeye patterns have been doing the job in these parts of the river.as for the hammer heads they are pretty much a bms with dumbell eyes which make the fly fairly heavy , just what is needed to get down to the fish hanging off the drop off's into about 8 to 10 feet of water.mate the shrimp looks cool and the minnow looks like a winner , what line are you fishing the minnow with as most of my fishing these days is done with a s/a mastery sink tip line, seems to be a good compremise{god i wish i could spell}

G'day Will10,
I've been using the cortland 444sl in the sink tip. That's the green floating line with clear intermediate sink tip. Been using it for everything lately instead of the regular clear intermediates.

Zonker fly.........here goes.

3x long shank hook either 2 or 4

lead tape stuck over the hook shank cut to a baitfish profile.

start your thread at the head- slide a piece of prismatic mylar bout half the body length hanging out to fray for the tail and fasten. whip it and remove thread.

pull the mylar back a bit to get the shape, using your third hand attach the thread at the rear and tie off mylar- whip and remove.

I then give it a light coat of epoxy and spin it.

When dry, attach thread at head again, cut a piece of zonker around a length and a half and attach at head (with the fur flowing back). I usualy shave the zonker hide a bit and remove the hair just where you tie it in at the head (makes it slimer). Add some fluff for gills if you wish. Finish and remove.

Start thread at rear again, pull zonker strip back tight and bind on at rear (use a little spit to get the hair to bunch and stand out of the way when wrapping). Whip n cut.

Attach your choice of eyes. I then add a thin coat of 5 minute over the eyes/head to finish off. Tease out the mylar at the back.

Whew. Hope I haven't missed anything and that makes some sort of sense. Just PM me if it doesn't. I've had a looonnnggg day
at work and everything is a little hazy.
