Assist Hooks On Bent Minnows?

Hey all, just wondering...Do any of you use assist hooks on the back of bent minnows for bream or do you all just stick with using trebles?

Assist on the middle on my bents.

I put them in the middle as well it also works very well in suger pens

why middle? wouldnt they sit hard up against the body of the lure when in motion?

Being a bent minnow, the middle treble sits a little higher then the rear treble. So having the assist hooks hang into the water helps with hook ups. Funny thing I've found with the bend minnow is the bream seem to smash the things side on! Where 9 out of 10 times with a Sugapen they grab it from the rear. It comes down to the way the lure sits in the water at rest. Most other surface lures sit on a 45 degree angle.

How about if you chasing whiting on sugar pen, do you still put assist in middle and treble in back??

Assist will go on the rear as the whiting like constant retrieve.

Try to remember that bream will try to sip or suck the lure off the surface. They cannot simply bite it as it will move away( cannot compress water). When they try to suck the lure in the loose hanging assist hooks are sucked straight into their mouth. That is why they are so effective. Same principle with hanging a single assist hook off a jig or GT popper. When the fish sucks the lure in the hooks find their way straight into the fish's mouth. So even if the bite is not as agressive you will find a reasonably good hook up.

Thanks for the info mate, I run assists on my whiting lures and they do the job very nicely but hadn't really given them a go while fishing for bream...But I tried them out for the first time last week while chasing bream on surface and they certainly proved there weight in gold for me
I've since then, now changed all my bents over to assists, running them on the middle
