Luvias 2506

I purchased a luvias 2506 on Friday after having a play with my brothers one. His is super smooth to wind. After fishing mine last night and tonight for a few hours I've noticed it feels quite grindy/rough when winding under any sort of pressure. Not something is expect from a $400 reel. Should I strip all the factory grease and oil and re lube it? Or would I be better off taking it back and possibly having it sent back to daiwa to be inspected? Only problem with that is when I recently sent my caldia in for a warranty problem it was away for around a month and ended up costing $100 to fix.
How's everyone else who has one finding there's? Did it take a while to wear in? Or was it perfect out of the box? Thanks in advance for any advice or opinions
Cheers Scott

Send your reel to slazmo.. he's the guru in servicing reels. I'm pretty good at it myself and I'm sure there are other guys here who'd help out. I'd safely say we'd do a better job than daiwa.

it might take 10-20hrs of solid fishing to get your reel smooth. My 2508 exist was a bit rough out of the box but a VERY SMALL squirt of lanox into the internals via the bottom plate and 10+ hrs of winding freed it up. One of my smoothest reels now. Wind it 5 mins a few times a day and it'll free it up.

Thanks for the reply guys. Was just surprised because I brought a certate a fortnight ago and it was smooth as straight from the box and only getting smoother. Knew the luvias wouldn't be quiet as smooth but was hoping it wouldn't feel the way it does. I'll give it a couple more weeks an if it's no better I'll take it to tacklewarehouse and get them to service it see if it makes a difference. Hopefully a few weeks fishing and a couple big trevally on surface will fix it up

Yep.

I would swap the Lannox for the MX5 Inox Plus (Teflon).

The MX4 Lannox is a good corrosion inhibitor and protectant however lanolin isnt that good for anti wear - but good for anti corrosion!

MX5 is Inox Food Grade with Teflon - supposedly smashed a ball wear scar test they did with a independent test agency, without compromising the corrosion benefits of MX3 Inox Original Formula. Thats the oil I am using in my reels (MX5 predominantly), and have been for a while now with no adverse reactions.

Within regards to the giving the reels a "buzz" - I am doing that most afternoons and mornings before / after work. This not to get smoother reels but to keep them going for my test I am conducting. Wish I could get a winding jig made up - wind these test reels sporadically for hours on end. Finding it harder and harder I work these two jobs to go fishing after work and upkeep the house and all thats going on...

both my sienna yak reels run no grease or oil - only inox lanox and after two years are not worn.

I'd say send it back, you wont have to pay anything if anything is wrong with it as it should still be under warranty.

All the luvias's I have felt have been great out of the box, so definitely shouldn't feel grindy as far as I am concerned.

Slazmo all tongue and cheek lol.you know more about the servicing part of reels than diawa.one of the biggest reason I got rid of all my diawa reels 15 years ago was there service was very poor.shimano are just around the corner from me and never had any issues when it came to repairs but when your purchasing a reel over $250 and up there's no excuses.i had a feel of shimano new symetre and elf and they were very smooth off the shelf.personally I would send the reel back.whats to say he won't have further issues down the track.are diawa still at pittwater?

I bought an exist about 18 months ago that had symptoms like you describe.
Sent it back to Daiwa, they replaced the main and pinion gears and it came back smooth as silk and being under warranty cost me nothing.
I reckon send it back before you do more damage.

If its under warranty and its been serviced before - sometimes it can pay to send it back and have them look at it.

When you have a reel, use it, service it regularly you essentially are creating a similar scenario as owning a car. When it goes in for service someone looks into it - discerns what problems are needing to be remedied, once its fixed and all serviced it goes back to the user / owner.

If anyone wants to look into watch servicing - be assured to be mind blown! Makes servicing fishing reels like childs play...

When you service reels, you are veritably in the dark. You dont know what the owner has done to the reel, you don't know how they've looked after it or how they will look after it when it goes back to them. I know what I do with my reels so its easy to do my reels - other peoples I guestimate and go from there and do the exact same to their reels that I do to my reels.

Within regards to the drive gear and the pinion issue - this is the main cause of of most peoples bane once a reel gets reassembled. When teeth dont mesh together as they once did thats when you get that feeling of 'noise'. Upsetting a reels fine workings when its working just nice, can sometimes fluff the whole thing, problem is they 'have' to be lubed and cleaned at regular intervals!

Sometimes its better knowing that the reel is properly lubed and has a slight amount of noise - than having a smooth reel with dirty internals with metal swarf floating around.

I ended up taking the reel back to tacklewarehouse today. There gonna send it back to daiwa and get them to check that there's nothing majorly wrong with it. Hopefully it's nothing major and won't be away for more then the 2 weeks I've been told it will be. Will just have to wait and see what they say
