wd40 on hooks?
has anyone used wd40 or inox or something similar on their trebles to prevent rust?
if so,does it help and does it effect your catch rate.ie does the spray put the fish off, being such an alien scent.ive read elsewhere its not a problem and the fish dont mind the smell. cheers bomb

I don't use either, just wash the lures I use on the day, dry and put back in the tray. WD40 will dry out, it's not a long term protector of metals. Inox will last longer.
I use lanox spray on a cloth to wipe down my rods & guides after each session, seems to keep the wands in good nick. Not directly answerin your Q, sorry. |

I Inox mine, it makes no difference to your catch but definitely helps prevent rust.

The main ingredient in WD-40 is fish oil.
Not sure whether it would put fish off though. It has a pretty strong smell

Use Lanox in all conditions you can think. It can be used on anything. It has the benefits of Inox, but is safe around rubbers as an aerosol. The Lanolin along with the Teflon gear really protects etc.
People need to learn to stay away from the likes of RP-7 and WD-40. When i rinse my lures in warm water, i dry them on some paper towel. Over night there is no water left on them. Naturally it will take longer in a cold shed or garage. I bring mine in next to by desk and dry them under the heater vent. If you take a heap of meds and crap like me, you will have endless silicon sachets to store your lures with to protect them. |

The fish oil in WD40 thing is an old wives tale unfortunately Jadon, this is from their own website:
"Myth: WD-40 contains fish oil. Fact: Consumers have told us over the years that they have caught some of the biggest fish ever after protecting their fish hooks and lures with WD-40. We believe this legend came from folks assuming that the product must contain fish oil since it appears to attract fish. Sorry Charlie, it just ain’t so." I tend to use Ballistol these days, don't know what the hell is in it but it claims to be 100% biodegradable, smells like aniseed which I quite like and doesn't seem to leave oily crap in the bottom of the trays. A mate who is into firearms put me onto it apparently it is the shizzle for guns lol

Wouldn't be surprised if it attracts fish, does a million other things.

I have seen a few times over the years on email & social media an article claiming to be the facts about WD40. In it it said the main ingredient was fish oil. Perhaps it goes to show you shouldn't believe everything you read. Lol

Main ingredients, from the material safety data sheet, are: 50%: Stoddard solvent (mineral spirits, somewhat similar to, but not the same as, kerosene) 25%: Liquefied petroleum gas (presumably as a propellant, carbon dioxide is used now to reduce considerable flammability) 15+%: Mineral oil (light lubricating oil) 10-%: Inert ingredients No Fish oil in WD-40... Agree! Its the best stuff since oxygen. RP-7 isnt too bad as its more a oil base than WD-40 - I have used it in exterior handles on doors and hinges and its by far so much better to use then WD-40. I was my lures in a bucket - then hang then on a line eg: washing line under a eve overnight or rest them on a porous surface eg: non terry like towel or a old pillowcase. WARNING: stupid outside the box thought occurring
This thread got me thinking about different methods of rust/water proofing so I thought along the lines of possible coatings for trebles etc, and then this thought occurred: would dipping the treble and split ring in hot wax and then letting it cool could have any effect on your fishing, aside from corrosion resistance? For instance making a lure dead silent?
