Sustain info?

Hey all
I've been doing a bit of self servicing on a couple of my older reels and wanted to have a look at my sustain 1000fg. That was until I realised I don't have an Allen key small enough to take out the little grub screw in the shaft before I take the rotor off. To me it looks very small and easy to strip. Anyone done this themselves with or without dramas? Do u recommend doing it or not bothering?
Cheers
Dazz

ive a screwdrive set which came with a little clear box with those tiny little 8 piece set.. the ones that are 1/4 thickness of a pencil, metal and have a little metal ball on the end that you can turn around and around. The business end is the same colour as lead in a pencil. You will know the ones when you see them in the screwdriver section in Supercheap. get a set and there is a flat head that wedges in perfectly, gets it off no worries.

......Well I'd reccomend doing it if you want to remove the rotor and servicing your reel....

I recommend using the correct Allen key, and not wedging a screwdriver in to remove it. You'll prob have to buy an entire set, but hey Allen keys always come in handy especially if your servicing reels

You're a man. Buy some tools!!
Agree on using the right size Allen key as well. The amount of things I've stuffed up in a hurry using the wrong tools

Its good to have a good at servicing them yourself, then you can have a better understanding of how it works and to see any problems that is or going to happen to the reel. Remove build ups of grease and freshen it up. Its a pain sending a reel off when you can do it in a little while and have it the next day to use

Might grab some Allan keys tomorrow and give it a go. I've learnt heaps recently from doing some other reels and they have turned out fine. Even did an old browning baitcaster that a couple of tackle shops have said they wouldn't bother because of its age and parts aren't around. It turned out great! The other thing I was gonna ask was have many of u had bearings made to replace bushings in reels? Was thinking of doing this to a spool bushing in this browning baitcaster.
Thanks guys.

That allen key is a 0.09 Allen Key - you can get them from remote control shops that have them specifically for remote controlled helicopters. Smallest Allen I sell at my store is 1.5mm - looks small but is way too big! I tried micro / precision screwdriver in that bearing grub screw on my Sustain - no go.

Shimano make two grub screws with a Allen key both in 0.07 and 0.09mm... You cant get the Allen's from Shimano they refuse to sell them - my mate Pete has quiet a few from his supplier - they are very fine and can strip themselves as they aren't a cr-mo based steel - they are not long lived either and cost about $10 each.

That grub screw - Lose it or strip it at your own peril! Mind you if it doesnt go back in it isnt such a biggie - just slip those washers that live on top of that spool bearing as it wont go anywhere. Thats what I did on my Sustain - keep that grub screw in a ziplock baggie in its box.

P.s. look after that spool bearing eg: undo the shield circlips and dump some good water resistant grease in there eg: 2-4-C. This will lessen that chance of water getting in it and it swallowing its tongue (not a cheap bearing to replace). Its a slow moving bearing - doesnt need Abec quality oil's or greases.

The Sustain is pretty mundane inside - no eccentric oscillation gears to stuff up like the old Saros and Symetre - its a worm drive instead... They pull apart pretty easily and are easy to clean out - would recommend a few things to you however! PM me and I'll let you in on a few things.

P.s. found a pic of a .07mm Allen key - the .09 is .02mm bigger and thats the one you need. This is beside my finger circa 2010.
