Drag - Grease or Oil?
Gday guys,
Just prepping for some trips and wouldn't mind to get the reel drags (Saltiga, SOL, luvias and certate) in top notch. I've got some realfour daiwa grease and some daiwa oil. What do you guys recommend in terms of drag maintenance? Cheers Pat

pi55 the standard washers off and replace them with carbontex, apply cals reel and drag grease and enjoy the ride.
cal'c aint expensive, considering you're fishing with saltigas. if you're rocking a coke bottle with a shoe lace wrapped around it and a bent nail at the end, it may be out of youre price range I put no limit on the price of reel maintenance

Some drag washers like oil and some like grease - my new Shimano Sustain went all crap on me when I put just that 'little too much' oil on the grease oil mix I do for my washers.
Cals is overpriced - no doubt, for what it is. if you use a good waterproof grease you cant go wrong, carbontex washers purchased as a set for reel specifically can get expensive. You can buy Carbontex sheets from the downriggershop.com.au for about $25 a sheet and that can do about 5 to 8 reels - which is a good investment! So much so I bought two and have done near all my reels and barely gone through one sheet. Spend some time on your drag's as they're the most important thing on your reel! |

You can get a small tub of Cals Drag Grease either light or standard grade plus a bottle of Oust bearing oil, which is one of the best around, delivered from Smooth drag for about $20 ,that is pretty good value. The small tub of Cals will last for ages, plus there is no problem in getting the oil grease mix right.

A wad punch kit and a small fine flat file is all you need Matt.
I have even managed to cut some pretty decent washers with scissors back in the day and touch them up with a file. This is a time intensive exercise though and it sucks if you stuff it up. You can also go right out and pick up a mayhew was punch kit from the states for a few hundred bucks. These allow you to make an internal and external circle cut in one hit. Jack erskine's workshop uses these, but they cut alot of washers ![]() I put up a DIY carbontex drag upgrade post a while ago that might help ya Nagz

Nope cant import a Wad punch into Aus - the one's I'd need would be up to 35mm dia - can import them due to sharp implement rules lol...
Anyhow I am using a Fiskar's Ti coated hobby scissors - cutting slightly larger diameter than needed and then trimming down the edges. For the centre I am punching it out with a smaller hole punch set. So far so bloody good!
