Sustain 10000 FG

I know it's a bit heavy for most of the fishing talked about on this site, but I was looking at one to match to a Pro Blue loomis for pelagic fishing. Has anyone used one and do they like/dislike it and the reasons?

I don't want this to be a Daiwa v Shimano thing and if I had a spare $800 I would get a Stella.

Any input would be appreciated.
Regards,

T Curve

Nice reel but still $600 plus unless you know where to get them cheaper?

No probs. Go a Okuma Salina 2 or 3.

Very tough reels. Very economical. I got the 5000.

for what you intend it for id look more towards the Biomaster sw8000. its E.I treated and more specifically designed for the saltwater use. also the handle would come out a bit cleaner an tidy after a few years of use. they are the equivalent to the Twin Power minus a few bearing. but the internal materials and configurations are all the same as the Stella SW and TP.

ive no idea what the 10000 Sustain was intended for but the Biomaster is right up your ally out of the 2.

alternatively if you only intend on landing a few dozen fish under 20kg a year then the Saragosa 14000 has proved itself well for this application. nearly twice the drag and only half a dozen internal parts = less strain on the reel. I think a few big hard runs on the Sustain might burn the DohDohDohDoh out of it. When you consider 10kg load and 70,80 meter runs this is what the Biomaster and Saragosa where intended for.

+1 for the saragosa 14000, had a hard time deciding whether to get a sustain 10000 or the saragosa 14000, got the saragoes tho and would never look back.

I have the 5000FG and am not that impressed with the smoothness and the drag.

The drag washers in the 5000 are pretty measly and there is a lot of wasted space and there is nothing you can do about it - eg: cant cut larger washers from Carbontex to fill in the space...

I would also suggest the Saragosa - they should be coming down in price as they're getting the X Ship facelift soon like the Ci4's.

Also look at Mo's / Anglers Warehouse (Tweed Heads) prices before going anywhere - I managed to save about $80 on the price when I went to B.C.F.

Old tech is just as durable - the old Saragosa wouldnt have made it into as many hearts and minds if it wasnt all it was. With the addition of X Ship and some other so called upgrades will just add price and possibly loose some fans due to whatever reason.

Hoping that Shimano will do a good job on it like Stradic's FJ's...

by rights it shouldn't change in price at all if its just getting the extra bearing for X-Ship. the biggest problem with the Saragosa is most people run 20lb + braid on them; the only upgrade the Sara needs is Varispeed to Aero Wrap II and im sure it would then be the number one surf and bay reel most people will turn to. X-Ship is no longer a flagship only addition, its now just become a standard feature on more shimano spin reels than not.

None that i could find at the moment?

X Ship, Variable Oscillation II and all that has to be paid for somewhere by someone, Ci4 demanded a premium at first and is now on a few modles eg: Thunnus rotor, Ci4 Stradic, Sustain Rotor and whatever else on other reels.

X Ship is something that all Shimano reels may incorporate - pitty they didnt bring it all in at once, mind you there are a lot of bargains out there for the taking on those reels that dont have that new tech. I for one would have loved a Saragosa 5000 instead of my Sustain 5000... Price was still too high unfortunately... With a lot of the Shimano reels you may find that they're loosing bearings in some places - eg: Shimano BTR's no bearing in the line roller, and some are lesser bearing than last year from memory.

I read an article maybe on tackletour that reels are about $10 more per each series change - may not seem much in figure of speach however it adds up in the end every year...
