Tagging Black Bream?
I have been thinking for a while about tagging black bream and learning more about there movements, growth and so forth .But I am not sure in how to go about it. So my question is...how do I do this, and how do I go about it?

Personally i think you won't be able to, because i have already tried!
Only marine biologists that have a good reason, fisheries obviously and recfishwest i believe can do this. however i don't think its such a hot topic for them to do this because they have got so much information on previous tags. ill ask Dawson later for you but.

Would it be necessary to tag them, most W.A estuary systems are small so they wouldn't travel far ?

A tagging program for black bream is already in operation.
It is a collaboration between the WA bream classic series and Recfishwest but only for the Mandurah based events at the moment. Call Recfishwest office for the details

The thing is sexton if you aren't going to knock up a detailed report and analysis of your findings it is kind of pointless. to write and detailed report you would need huge amounts of data (in excess of 5,000 recaptures) to make it even slightly relevant.
Also with smaller fish species like bream they are actually quite hard to tag properly and in many cases can have adverse reactions to the tags. It often creates infection and lesions which have an impact on the fish's capacity to spawn. |

Sexton give Murdoch Uni a call they have carried out a few studies of Black Bream in Wilson inlet and some surrounding water ways. I did some tagging as did some other locals for the late Ben Chewun who was writing a paper on the topic of sustainability at the time and this was from Murdoch.
