Rusting SOL ?

Was taking some photos of my reels today when i notice my SOL has rust on the arm.

Is this normal ? the reel is still smooth, would only be a year old, had a look at my Stradic ci4 which is 2 years old and it has no rust ?

They both get washed out and treated the same, if anything, the Stradic has had 4 times the use the SOL has

Has it been dunked before mate?

Not the first thing you'd like to see!

Never been dunked mate, and if someone that borrowed it dunked it i would think the bearings would have rusted out too, but it seems to be smooth

Not so much getting dunked, but rather resting the reel on the sand near the shore laying on the handle.

You obviously didn't clean it properly.

I have no rust in my sol's handle and all I do is give the reel a light spray of water and wipe down after each session.

Has yours been exposed to salt water spray as in on the deck of a boat ?

I'd be blasting that handle out with innox and letting it sit for a few days.

Hey mate,
I just went and checked mine no rust.
It is several years old and has taken some punishment.
I used mine on a kayak for years and it coped a lot of salt spray and didnt always get looked after as it should and yet it still has no rust.
Cant explaine the rust you are experiancing but a bit of a clean with a small wire brush on the affected parts only and after disasembly, and perhaps some fish oil spray should see you right.
Good luck.

Wow that sucks

I have had a few sol's, never had that happen on them or any reel. I would suggest your or someone you lent it too has done the incorrect thing with it.

Like said above maybe laying it in the sand or something.

I would suggest you will have other parts with rust in them in that reel, probably will be no good in a year. Try replacing the part that is rusty so you dont contaminate the rest of the reel if that has not already happend

Cheers
Chris

I have no idea honestly, i look after it the same as my other reels, i don't leave it in the sand (i fish from a boat all the time)

Checked all my other reels (15 or so) and not one of them as abit of rust ? i honestly don't otherstand but it must of been someone i lent it too

Handle has been taken off the reel and gonna fix it up the best i can

Thanks

a few of my Daiwa reels have some rust in the same spot mate. All I can think is when I have cleaned them down after the trips that I have missed this small area or water has stayed pooled in there. Pretty crappy little setup to be honest. I striped mine down and they were easy enough to clean up then treat with some spray.

Thumbs up

shouldn't affect the performance of the reel having rust there but the question is is it rusted else where ?

just clean it up with a scourer and spray it with some inox

It might be that pin that goes through there. Mine got a bit loose and I turned up another one out of stainless. I could almost swear they were stainless pins but if someone has replaced it with a steel one, it would rust out pretty quick????

Whatever caused it i'll be more careful next time

I have sprayed it with innox and now just gonna let it sit for a few days

I normally put my rods and reels in the shower to wash (light pressure warm water) might just put the rods in there now and wipe the reels down with water and a spray bottle

Thanks guys, good to know i'm not the only one

looks like a bad batch of stainless steel! Seen this happen in bike wheel spokes, where for 4 odd years every bike out of china would have its stainless spokes 'pop' from bad stainless steel.

I'd write to Daiwa and send in those pic's, there has to be an explanation to that!
