Recharging marine battery

How often should you recharge a trickle battery that isn't being used ?

I know Deep Cycle batteries don't like being left not fully charged, but after charging mine, I often leave it a few weeks and charge it again just before I use it, with no ill efects.

I have a charger that you can leave permanently connected - it keeps the charge topped up.

They cost a bit more but i believe it is better for the life of the battery.
