Trebles on poppers
Hi everyone, just after some advice on some quality trebles that help improve your catch rate on bream and other species that take surface lures.
Im using a zipbait skinny pop, which is a excellent lure, with the standard trebles and am getting a fair few hits but hardly any hookups. So any advice on trebles for these would be apreciated. Thanks |

Hi mate,
Poppers and surface lures are always difficult to get solid hook ups unless the fish are really smashing them - and even then they still miss! Try some Decoy's or owner ultra lights for some great sticky sharp trebles.

I have had some success on putting two split rings on the back of the surface lures to hang it a bit lower in the water. Sure the surface strike isn't as big but I find you get a few more hook ups to hits ratio.

me too normally put a size 12 wide gape on front and a 14 wide gape on the rear with a double split ring

When fishing for Cod I found that by using larger trebles and heavier split rings out hook up rate was much better.
Using the heavier hardware makes the lure sit lower in the water and makes it easier for implosion feeders (Cod,Bass, EP's, Barra) to suck the lure in. Dont know how it would work with the smaller 'walk the dog' style lures for Bream, but on paddlers like jitterbugs its deadly. |

On poppers for a lower sit in the water I use slightly bigger and thus heavier trebles than std, and on bigger walk the dog lures 60mm + I use a number 12 Decoy or Gama TWG on the front and a number 10 on the back, or for bass maybe a 10 and an 8 on the back etc.
I've found that the Owners in size 10 are too thick looking but then again i've had big Moreton Bay bream snap hooks off the number 12's with ease On ultra small poppers i might use heavier rings and bigger hooks than std but am experimenting with the Owner UL as they are nice and fine. Big fan of barbless single hooks so may even look at barbless trebs if they are as fine and strong as the singles that some Trout HB's from Japan come with. Mick. |

Thanks for all the replies guys. So in general, it seams that either 2 split rings and a smaller treble at the back is the way to go. Or upgrade the treble size so that the back of the lure sits deeper down? Yea im defernately looking at barbless hooks for easier release. As some of u may know, the bream in Perth are hard to tempt on the surface so i want to make sure im giving myself the best chance of getting a hook up every hit i get. |

thanks driftcorp, i think it sounds like my best bet is just to experiment with different sorts of trebles and different sizes

Hey,
Owner ST-11's light and very sticky, but no good if you are fishing locked up drags in racks and snags. The hooks off the Zx blades also work a treat .Cheers,
