I'm Extremally happy with my Stella Spin rod and i would recamend it if u r interested in the Squidgie but i havnt tried the squidgie yet so yeh.

On my Stella i have landed a 56cm Flathead a 4lb trout and small Salmon and i can say i was totally happy with it during evry fight!

The Steve Starling Stella Spin is a lighter rod than the squidgy I'm sure...if not specs wise, its blank is thinner and its not as long so I'd go with that over a squidgy any day, btw I'v got one stella spin and its an excellent entry level bream rod.

Check out the heartland im6's also, apparently they are supopsed to be technically 'better' than teh steve starling rods, but dont load up as well IMO

Stella's the go!

Heya Fishoben,
I was in a similiar spot you are in a while back. The advice on the stella spin rod is spot on. Sure we woul all love to have the fancy pants flash gear but there are just as many other priorities in life as having the wizz bang gear.
I bought the stella spin last january and so far landed a 10kg carp, numerous lizards over the 50cm range, more bream. I used it in the whitsundays and had no protests from the stick landing 2 diamond trevally around 50cm and 1 golden trev to 65cm.
They are light and affordable, so when the day comes when it finally goes snap I won't have to mortgage the house.
Instead of buying one reel consider spending down and getting two. I bought two Abus FN1000 from bigw for $95 both have served me very well since january. I have 2kg on one and 6kg on the other. If you buy a budget range reel, make sure you pull it apart clean all the red grease the factory shove in it and lube it up with marine grade light machine oil. The reels life will dramatically increase and be smoother than a "Kashmir Codpiece"

From the horses mouth (Ian Miller) on another site wher we all asked about the Squidgy Spin 70 and differences to the Stella Spin 66.

"To compare this rod simply to the Stella 66 Spin, the Stella was a rod primarily designed for hard-bodied lures that also fishes soft plastics, whereas the Squidgy Spin is designed primarily for soft plastics but will also fish hard bodies easily. Handle dimensions are the same."

I got some light grade oil from a boat mechanic in a used juice bottle so i don't know its name. He mentioned sewing machine oil works quite well. Another otion is to go to a mechanics suppliers and ask for a light grease/ oil lubricant for saltwater. In the budget range of reels the manufacturers pack it with grease so the reel will last the warranty. I have never used a squidgy spin. My opinion is based on my experience with the stella.
Cheers.
