Fat profile HB's Vs Shad style

Ive been stocking up on my hard body cranks of late. Ive been wondering What and why people choose a fatter wide wobbling profile HB ( such as a chubbie or Atomic Crank 38D ) over a shad or slimmer profile HB ? (ecogear SX40's or Pontton21 Crackjacks 48.

Is the difference between the two style's depend on the type of stucture your fishing ? if the bream are hesitant and shut down ? Or does it come down too personal preferene.

Ive caught bream on both style's but it never dawned on as to why there is a difference , as every single Hb company offers the two, usually the colour ways ar the same its just the different HB profile that changes

Cheers Toby

The "chubbier" ones usually have a wide wobble, opposite with the "shads".

I think its just a weight issue toby the shorter chubs are heavier than shads..sx40's were to light for my likeing i wont use anything under 5grams these days and ill go up to a 90mm minnow with #8 trebs even 10gramers just find they swim better..as when i used sx40's they would not swim streight if retreived a little faster..

i generally will use a crank style for open water, they are generally heavier so you can cover more ground. with the wide action they produce, i prefer just to slow roll em with the occasional pause and twitch. if fishing structure like rock walls i might go to a shad style which i can pause and dart around much easier.

yeah like agz said, the slimmer profile allows more erratic darting movements when twitched, whereas fatter bodies produce a wider wobble more suited to slower retrieves.

Sx40's are my go to lure. I have countless otehr ones, but love the sx40's. Like you said nige they are really light which can be an issue some times.

The wider wobble opposed to a tighter shimmy action is not the issue, I guess Why do people use a wider wobble for open flats instead of a tighter shimmy.

A tight shimmy lure that has a decent weight to cover larger distances ( cultiva mirrashad ) why do people seem to shy away from them when working things such as flats .

Or why don't people use a shallow diver with a wider wobble for things such as boat hulls , and pontoons.

I Use just about all type's of HB's , just curious to finf out peoples thoughts on why they choose to use the different styles of lures.

i use both types mentioned and have found both have their time and place. for instance, like others have said I have found the shad style lures work much better around pontoons and other structures and work well with a twitch and pause retrieve. the chubby style lures I have found work better over open ground (however got a couple of bream on friday throwing them against bank side structure) and work better with a slow roll retrieve IMO. however I mainly use the atomic crank38 deep and it floats quite quickly which makes it difficult to do long pauses and keep the lure in front of the fish. this is just my opinion and I have had a few sessions where the fish reacted to a lure that was worked in a place I would usually use a different style.

Like everyone else has said it's all to do with action and what works around the area. I have found that most shad styles suspend or slow float. And fat style ones float at a medium pace or faster. So the outcome can vary between person, place and lure used.

+1... I have found that its is all about trial and trial and trial. I have tried to use as many hb's as I can so that I become aware of which one works for each different situation. Once armed with this information then any decision that you make becomes informed and that helps create your go to lures list. But on any given day this info can all go out with the tide. Thats fishing. Regards. HBt.

This might be a huge call but I had far more success on the minnow profile over the chubbies especially when i was starting out. I believe black bream which make up 90% of all I catch down here like a slower less erratic action which minnows lend themselves to when retrieved slow roll with pauses.
Hence why I only own a few chubs and all minnows.

Anyway that's what works for me when using Diving hbods.
