Trolling for Trout.

G'day fellas.

95% of the time, I'm land based, although my uncle is lending me his boat for a couple days, and thought I might go to troll around for some trout as I do have a boat licence.

The lake i'll be going around is a deep volcanic based lake, although what i'm having trouble with is picking the right lures to bring along on the trip.

Do trout normally hang around the top even though its several meters deep around the edges? Ill probably have 2 rods out trolling

From my experience, this time of year I tend to get more fish on a lead line compared to flat line... Have been getting a few lately up at Eildon on yellow winged tasie devils and also had success on SX40 in 337 (green/orange) colour, also the Sebile spin shads seem to be performing pretty well!

what reel do you use with lead line? i bought some just looking for a reel now.

I've got a couple of Shakespeare skp 6000 overheads, they take 100 meters of 12lb lead line and have the loudest ratchet I have ever heard... you can pick up similar ones (not sure they make that model anymore) for about $50 on evilbay...

Damiki MU-SP in Apache and a Halco Laser Pro 45 in Rainbow trout. (Or similar)

This covers shallow and deep and I've caught trout on both of these lures trolling behind my yak.

Trolling for trout isnt as simple as it seems...

Depends what time of year, what time of day, weather conditions and water temp in order to work out where you want to put your lure in the water column.

time of year is related to the pre or post spawn feeding.... either is good, although i prefer post, time of day is important, early morning and low light situations trout will be higher in the water column, possibly looking for insects for minnows, mudeyes ect, during the middle of the day at the height of the sun the trout will sit down in the thermocline (where the water contains the most oxygen, usually also where the water changes temp dramatically) this can be found on a well setup sounder it will appear as a blured and speckled line across the sounder, and that is the depth you would be aiming to get your lure to, you will also notice most fish that are sounded up will be in this depth range.

use many colors at the start and see what is working then change accordingly, also dont be scared to use lures as big as 100mm
