Popping for whiting

Yesterday i had my first proper go at popping for whiting. I was using trion tournie, td sol 2000, 2lb fireline and 4lb fluro. I put a bit of S-Factor on the popper and it seemed to get the whiting to follow and hit the popper, but only smaller whiting would do this. I've read that it's better to use a shorter, heavier, mono leader as this will help impart a better action as well as get it to track straight - is this correct? I was walking a flat from ankle deep to knee deep water and the big whiting were there but just not interested. Do you guys have any tips on how to get the bigger whiting to follow?

Use the search function, theres a stack of good threads if you just search 'popper whiting'. To get the attention maybe use a bigger popper you need to do a fast non stop retrieve all the way back to you, pop pop pop pop just constantly. IMO the clearer/more transparent the popper the better

I use a leader of about 12inches in Mono. Great results as the popper runs straight.

What size popper are you using? I'd use a small 4cm clear popper. I like the r2s poppers.

sometimes when the whiting aren't hitting surface consistently it might be time to try a subsurface stick bait like the E-BR prawn or something that suspends under the water or sinks very slowly. good luck with whiting on poppers mate, it's hell fun when you crack it

i'm currently using the stiffy FRV. good weight and casts a mile which is good as im landbased. i've also got the rebel pop-r in clear but it's a bit light and hard to cast for me.

watching the smaller whiting attacking the popper was good to see as i'd never had a hit on the popper before. was fun watching them break the surface trying to eat it hopefully the bigger whiting will follow suit next time.

Stiffy FRV
Im also trying the Atomic Popper it casts
a mile and has nice action

Mix up retreive speeds also
if popper is not going any good
Try a walker like Maria pencil , or sugar pen etc
Once you crack the pattern u will be right.

They are much more agressive when prawns are
running.

mate, i would go with a larger size walk the dog lure if i were you.
its never completely bothred me using flouro with surface lures to tell you the truth. like some of the other people said, its important to keep that nice constant retrieve all the way back to you. dont even pause it if your getting hits.
its gotta be my favourite type of fishing through the summer...
