I wouldn't. Pick up a can of Inox, I use that and have had no concerns. In saying that I have never used WD40 but hav heard around the traps that it is detrimental to your gear.

Jakel,
The WD40 will remove the writing off the reel - on the spool etc. It will also ruin any grease / oil you have used to lube the reel. Previous advice on Inox is the go, shouldn't do any damage.
Regards,
Dave

WD40 will penetrate bearings and dissolve the grease and oils and be detrimental to the reel.

Inox is the way to go.

Best stuff I have ever used is Ballistol, check it out here. Most good tackle stores should have it. If you have trouble finding it and would like some let me know. It wont damage your line if you happen to get it on there - although I am sure that fish love the taste of it - and is the same stuff that Shimano use if you send your reels back to them for service.
