What Treble floats your.. Lure

Winter has kicked in,, so what better time is there to sit back in relax, and rumage thriugh the tackle box to see what is or isnt still in there.

Upon diving into my box of tricks, i notices that the trebles on some of the lures have seen better days, and the lures are well and truely in need of a new set of flippers, to get them swimming in their prime.

Having removed all the suspect trebles, i have given the babies a rinse in some warm soapy water and they are now have that sheen that only a Black breams mother could love..

My problem now is what type of trebles i should be fitting to finish off their much appreciated maintenance??

I have always had some spare Owners, to replace them routinely of if they were a tad worse for wear, but i have never gone ballistic and changed a huge batch.
Given the potential cost in replacing them all, i was wodering what other fellow bream anglers do when sizing up the shoes.?

Should i just fit the shoes as the lures hit the water, that way i wont need to replace them? Or is there another option out there in lieu of Owners?

I hear that the Decoy Black Bream trebles are great, or is there another option?

What size Owners do most use on here? I have my preference, but i thought it would great to here waht others do in this situation.

Also, what i have found is that cross contamination between the lures can cause the un used trebles to rust.. So what do others do for their storage?

Any pics would be awesome..

Cheers Nick

Nick just be carefull and try and replace with the same size as the originals if too big the lure will lose it's action and will possibly sink.

Depends on what type of fishing your doing good overall treble would be Owner ST-36 the finer gauge Owner ST-11 or the Decoys are very sticky and from my experience tend to hook up more and less dropped fish the downside is they will straighten on big fish if your trying to pull hard on them also need replacing more often.

l have multiple hardbodys (fav's) Nick but l only keep hooks on one set and the back ups remain hook less until needed. As Mark has stated trying to match treble size is key to some lures action but it is fun to experiment with different rings and sizes at times to have the lure doing exactly what you want whether it be through timber or over shallow flats whatever...It can be a costly exercise doing all your collection so maybe only do you fav's then do others as required, it takes little time to put a pair of trebles on your lure so l wouldn't be to fussed having every single lure done until needed.
Come comp days anything l am running has brand new trebles regardless of condition...it just makes sense to have the best on the day.
Oh yeah for many years I've run Owner ST 36 with no bad reports so they will remain my treble of choice when replacement time comes around.

Cheers Steve.

Thanks Mark

I will certainly take the size into consideration. I have used the finer gauage owners, and have found them to be to light for the type of terrain i usually fish, but that is not to say they dont have there place. The decoys look amazingly sticky, as you have noted, so i will take them into consideration. I would have loved to have kept all the trebles on, but as you would know rust spreads like disease, and the last thing i want to be doing is replacing the lures.

Steve,, i am thinking i will stick to your theory and only load up the favourites, as they are needed. It does take time, so preparing them before a competetion does make sense. I have been a bit lazy when it comes to treble replacement, so i thought it is time to look at getting some new ones.

Even prior to comp days, i have tended to just bend em as required But i could prove crucial and be a fish that is really needed.. i will take your info onboard

Owner ST-36 and ST-11's for us as well Nicko, or whatever brand W hooks I can get my hands on.

Generally I've found size 14 trebles get used the most, probably because they suit the size of hardbodies we like to use.

Cheers Paul.. Looks like the Owners are certainly an old favourite. So you'd say that the 14s are pretty universal? I usually get smoked, and lose the lure or just become lazy with the swappng out trebs, so havent really looked into to many trebs before.

re trebles

Hi Nick, ive been using the gamakatsu trb and twb trebles size 12 is smallest and have had no probs, better value for money as you get twelve in pack and wont affect action of medium crankbaits.

Thanks Greg. I will certainly have a look into the Gamas as well. The twelve pack sounds very appealing given that i need a couple.

They have been a long time due, as the strike pros that i have stripped down, have the old fine guage VMC, as they are the pre Owner models (Pygmy1 and Small Fry) and have suffered the fate of being isolated in a tackle box for the last five years. I will most likely do as noted by Mark and Steve, and trial them to see if they affect the bouyancy as they are a small cranks style lure, as to are the Ecogear SX40's i need to replace the trebs on.

The blades and Vibes are an easy change, as long as they dont tangle together

I've heard that too, wouldn't mind trying a few....

I use the Owner ST-36 mainly as well as Innovator W hooks.

I've put some size 12 Y-S25 Decoys on a few lures lately but haven't swam them just yet. They've got a slightly wider gap on them when compared to the Owners and go into the finger nice and easy

I'll let you know how they perform if I get some EP's on them today

The Decoys are slightly stronger than the Owner ST36. Approximately the same weight, wider gap, VERY sharp. They don't bend out as easily on bigger fish, but they do bend, and weaken if you try to straighten them too often.

I was and still am a big fan of the Decoy's, but find they are a bit light on some lures and require often require some extra weight to make the lure suspend properly......depends on the lure though.....but super sharp and resist the rust a little better than most of the owners I have experienced.
But I rate the Vanfook DT-35 very highly and use them as replacements most of the time these days......amazingly sharp, penetrate well but do rust reasonably quickly so I tend to only fit to the lures I am using at the time.

I find the Decoys are extremely sharp and 'sticky' as people have said, they seem to be slightly stiffer- possibly a higher-carbon steel which explains why they rust quicker for me.. They are generally a thinner wire diameter for their size than most other standard trebles other than the owner s-type, and I actually prefer being able to snap them if I get snagged- never snapped one on a fish yet..
