squid classic!!

Entered the squid comp today, don't know the full results and my team didn't win But we did pick up the biggest squid at just over a kilo! What a great day tho! Was very slow to start with, by the first hour we only had 2 small squid.
As the day wore on we filled our quota of 10 squid- Upgrade time!! Got a few good ones to knock out the small stuff and then 'Whack' My mates rod goes off- pulling a bit of line as well! into the boat it came Decided to motor back to the start of our drift again and literally in the same spot the reel went off again bringing in the next big one!
We thought we were near the top at the end, but know we were in the top five!

Todays squid comp was very good with a good crowd and nice weather. I would like to say thanks to the people who ran it to perfection ..Paul Willis ....Mike Roennfeldt....Craig Leatt-Hayter..Craigs son....the special squid guys from Japan.....c.o.c.kburn Pleasure Boat Storage who allowed the weighin eg to be held under cover etc.....the competitors and anyone else who i may have forgotten....

I ended up in freo where i got 16 squid all up but most were small...i was smart enough to take a couple buckets to keep them alive in an that was good as it was numbers 12 and 15 that gave my bag the most weight ....upgrading is not on when you already have 10 so at least the small ones are still swimming

i had a few casts back near the weighin and saw 6 salmon.....i landed the orange diawa emeralda jig in front of them and whacked it like a madman...one fish hit it instantly but dropped it on the first jump....

I did good at the weighin when i wasnt expecting too and some of the boaters bags were awsom.

When i got home and took a close look at the Breaden squid rod i won i realised what a trophy it was. The workpersonship.........is stunning and i have never owned anything of this quality...I am very grateful for this and cannot thank the two guys enough for donating this.....next weekend will see it used for the first time and i already have mates lined up to have a go. This rod is 8 foot but so light that you really could throw a zipbait tiny clear across the walpole inlet.

its definatly an upgrade from the 5 year old berkely dropshot and 4 year old diawa exceller which i might add is still as good as the day i got it due to running refrigeration oil and teflon grease inside. BUT...the new blue exceller is going to sit nice on the Breaden..the only problem now is do i run 5 pound straight through flurocarbon or that diawa braid that is like a rainbow colour....
I cant wait for the next squid classic to come around.

Szarn

Sounds like the Squid events in the WA are quiet a success, how long have they been running for in the WA? I wish they had similiar events in Victoria would be a great day out on the water.

Congrats Szarn!

For those who were'nt there, Szarn also relinquished his biggest squid win and allowed a younger guy to win the awesome prizes in his place (another $500+ Breaden rod I think and some extras). Top stuff.
(I'm the guy who was looking at the exceler just after you won it by the way)

They are perfect for bream and squid. They are silent, you're lower on the water and can launch anywhere you want. Plus, you get a good workout while fishing!

I'm looking forward to the next comp now. I was only 50 or 100g off a decent prize today but regardless it was a great day and I won a big bucket of squid at least!

It was a good day had by all accounts I herd- My mate and I can't wait for the next one, this was our first but won't be our last! Was very glad they weighed both of our large squid because there was a few hundred grams between them and that really made the difference.
Those squid rods looked fantastic, found it a bit strange that the rod that we got was a baitcaster?? But hey, it was more the fun of the day- not the prizes (even tho they make it better)
