i normally buy the more exy lures for the fact that i tend to have more success on them. it might be that i've spent the money on them so i might as well use them. the sx40 is definately my go to lure.

How do you define expensive HBs? Years ago when SX40s first came out, they were the expensive ones. The cheaper ones were strikepro. Now it appears SX40s might be considered cheaper lures in comparison with Jackalls, bassdays etc...

The simple answer is.. yes! they will have a nicer action, better tuned, better colours, and will outlast the cheapys multiple times over.

Lures

Poddy,

If you are talking about jap lures, then the simple answer is yes IMO. I think the most important thing is that you are using a lure you are confident will catch fish.

I use Chubbies, jades, camions, sx 40's, attomics, Bassday shads ect along with all manner of Surface lures and stick minnows.

Its also knowing when, how and the right colour for conditons, I know alot of people say colour doesn't matter but I am certain it does. Experiment with retrives, pauses, twitches ect

Also make sure you a good quality lure retrever, I reckon my $20 investment has saved me several hundred $$. Still loose heaps to Flatties though .

Regards,

Is entirely up to you

Do they catch more fish? Good question, you have to find out yourself.

The only way to check is to throw both expensive and el cheapo lures at the same location, using identical outfits and techniques. See what happens.

Most guys here would tell you that they had success with both. All depends on the day, weather, water clarity, colour, wind etc.

When I used to catch a fish on a pygmy on a given day, how would I've known that the more expensive lure would catch me the same fish if I already caught it?
It is a known fact that fish may be interested in one particular lure / colour and wouldn't touch anything else.
The safest way is to have a good variety of lures in your tacklebox catering for all scenarios.

Cheers,
Alex

For the most part, yes they are worth the extra money but don't discount lures like strikepro and Mcgrath attack lures. About the more expensive jap lures being tuned perfectly, I have found that with Ecogear but the Smith one I got didn't swim straight out of the box so there...

I find that I have more confidence in the more expensive lures, and this is what catches me more fish. The more confidence in the lure, the better

I think the perceived thoughts about Money = Quality makes it appear that more exspensive lures catch more fish. I think its more confidence in your gear makes you catch more fish. If you have confidence in locating fish, and correct technique, then how do the fish know that its a hawk lure instead of a sammy/chubby/____(insert pricey lure here).
If the cheaper style lure doesnt have the same body action of a top end lure; then it will affect the results. So maybe quality is important, but I think cheaper style lures are still great. Damiki's, River to Sea are 2 brands that are on the cheaper side but are still great lures. I'd mention hardz, but I saw them at $19 each today!
Cheers,
FF

It's not about weather or not the fish would hit a cheapo lure, of course they will, it's a lure! it's about the life span of the lure, I love river to sea but after 10 or so fish paint wears and sometimes the lure will even break! I have a lucky craft lure with 50 or so bream to it's name, the paint work is still good and it still swims like I bought it yesterday. So what would you rather? buy 1 $20 lure for 50 fish or like 4 $10 dollar for the same amount fish (and remember those cheap lures don't all work properly straight out of the box). Quality wins every time imo

Michael.

I think most lures will work regardless of the price. Lures like the Halco Scorpions are great lures, the paint may come off a bit quicker than something like an SX40 or Zipbait, but the fish catching ability is still there.

I'll admit to being a bit of a brand nazi - nothing in my box is under RRP $20 (oh the joys of being a tackle store employee). But I've recently been kitting out my friend with some cheaper lures, and he matches me most of the time!

Atomic Hardz are definitely worth a mention, they are amazing quality, the finishes are super tough and look great. The action is terrific too.

SX40s are probably my go-to lure, as I find their action to be ideal for my style of fishing. Strike Pro Pygmys are another I like to use. I think, providing you buy from a reputable brand, you will get a good fish catching lure. Some of the super cheapies may still catch, but durability, hooks and rings and quality control are not there.

To be completely honest, it probably doesnt matter how much you pay per lure, you will end up spending the same in the long run!
