State Government begins planning for another new marine reserve
The planning process to consider the creation of a marine conservation reserve in the Walpole and Nornalup inlets on the south coast is under way.

Environment Minister Judy Edwards today said the Walpole-Nornalup inlets composed one of the Government's five priority areas for addition to the State's marine conservation reserves network.

"The Walpole-Nornalup inlets and surrounding rivers form one of the most pristine and undisturbed estuarine systems in Western Australia," Dr Edwards said.

"The creation of a marine conservation reserve for this system will contribute to the conservation of the areas' distinctive ecological values and help manage human use on a sustainable basis.

"It is also about ensuring that we protect this unique environment not just for today, but for future generations."

The Minister said planning for the marine park followed the recent announcement of the appointment of the community advisory committee for the proposed Geographe Bay - Leeuwin Naturaliste - Hardy Inlet marine reserve.

"The State Government is also nearing completion of a new marine park in Jurien Bay, which will be the first created since 1990," she said.

"There is now a very clear difference between the Gallop Government's commitment to protecting WA's marine life and the non-existent record of the State Opposition."

Dr Edwards said the Department of Conservation and Land Management had begun the planning process for the creation of the proposed reserve. This process would be conducted in conjunction with the local and wider community and integrated with the planning process for the proposed Walpole Wilderness Area.

A focus group, consisting of local community members and staff from the department, would drive the development of a management plan for the proposed reserve.

"Tourism, recreational fishing and other activities will be fully considered in the development of a management plan for the area in recognition of the importance of these uses to the community," the Minister said.

"The management planning process provides for consideration of three different categories of marine conservation reserve and two of these reserves may be zoned for particular uses and purposes.

"This provides considerable flexibility to recommend a reserve type and zoning to facilitate the conservation, sustainable use and the community aspirations for the area.

"It is vital that the community is involved in the planning of the proposed reserve and contributes it knowledge and outlines its aspirations for the future management of the area."

Dr Edwards said CALM would be providing further information to the broader community through a local public information presentation to be held in Walpole, with regular updates available on the department's NatureBase website and in its Marine Conservation Matters newsletter.

People who want more information about the marine reserve process and what the proposed reserve may mean, can contact the department's Marine Conservation Branch in Fremantle on 9336 0121, or the local departmental office in Walpole on 9840 1251.

Now that this govt has "SAVED NINGALOO" it's hell bent on saving everything whether it need ssaving or not - in the hopes it will win back government despite the fact it killed every fish in the Swan River and has people on water restrictions for the last few years!

I'd say given the stance of kim chance with regard to pro netting and now this mad marine parks thing, spreading like a virus - that recreational fishing in this state is basically in it's death throes.

It seems their policy at cabinet level is ...

Kick all the rec fishers out, net all the fish and sell em - then pump the bloody water to Perth so we can kill all the remaining fish in the swan river with it.

Hard to believe such ecological vanfdalism could be so cleverly disguised as "conservation" isn't it!!

Trow de bums out!!!

Gallups a galah, Chance is a fishnets freak...Alana's a piss tank in charge of roat transport...what a mottley crew, what chance have we or our precious fish and the water they live in GOT with this crew of misfits at the helm????

Vote trouty 1 for benevolent dic tater!.

It's the only hope left!

Cheers!

Thumbs up You 2 younguns

Don't realise it yet - BUT the future of this countrys fishstocks and water resources belong with you guys.

Old Pharts like me - we've had our time - run our race (and lost).

Bye commin here and writing epics like i do - my most fervent desire is that enough young people who are the future decision makers of this nation - will at least know enough to think for yourselves...and make a difference in the world.

If it were up to me - i'd let you vote in an instant.

With the mess we grownups are makin of this world (speaking of shamefull things like the war crimes committed agaisnt the innocent women and children of Iraq and Afghanistan...to usurp their oil for our own greedy corporate profits of a FEW mega riich men in the world) I hardly think a group of kids could do any worse - in fact given the calibre of the kids I see and interact with today - I'm quite SURE they could do a better job than what us grownups are doing now.

How many of you kids would want to go and start a nuclear war with North korea - but thats JUST what the dumbazzes of my era are about to go and do as if Iraq an Afghanistan werent bad enough.

Use the force guys - just like the Jeddi..use the force - do what the will of your hearts tells you not what the evil of corrupt men try to brainwash you is the "smart thing"...

Treat the Earth and your fellow man & all that walks on the earth and swims in it's bountiful waters like your very own mothers - and learn to FIGHT tooth and nail to protect them - like you would your own mothers - against those who would seek to destroy them for greed, and short term gain.

Cheers - O B wahn trouty!

the fundamental structure of a society was once seen to be the personal relationships between individuals. personally i reckon people should drop the ego, fall in love and enjoy life, its so easy to lose focus on what we really enjoy, but then its also too easy to get lost in them! I aint old enough to really get out and about yet, to start a living and family etc but I'm looking forward to it!

Sometimes I look at couples and wonder how life must be to them. to have each other whilst facing this often messed up world, how can there be so many problems when you have someone, your other half with you?? I attribute that again to the loss of focus on what is really important and not. To concentrate on something to a degree that results in a shift of purpose altogether becomes a waste of your resources and time.

I reckon people should just sit back and have a think about things, where your exploits are taking you. of course in life you need to work to achieve your goals but then remember what your goals are! Dont get too bogged down in achieving on them, and dont dwell on failures and downswings that will always turn up somewhere along the road. Look to your friends and that special someone and you'l remember again what makes you happy.

To look upon the future and where the world and society will lead us may seem abit iffy. in a world getting weirder and weirder, as individuals we may not be able to do much but we can still control the way we live and enjoy things. Changing your perspective on something that wont change itself will often have the same affect, although that doesnt mean we shuoldnt try and make things right.

now im looking back at this and wondering what the heck I'm on about, but I guess what i'm trying to say is that life is to be enjoyed. If everyone did this there would be less conflict between ppl. dont get sidetracked and lose focus of what your really striving for, and dont forget about your loved ones and what it really means to you to be with them. this is, what i think is needed for the new generation of healthy minded individuals

to quote from some lit critic i found in my lit notes one day, 'fall in love, at no stage in life will ur perceptions be as heightened as when you are overwhelmed by love. While the symptoms are similar to the flu, do not ask for antibiotics' <-- true!

g'nite
