Fishing etiquette

Went for a fish on the Swan today and after pulling up to a snag and dropping the pick (it was very windy) started to work it with a sneaky.3 casts later I was in to a fish that went 35cm.After removing the hooks and dropping him in to a livewell began to cast again.As I was doing so one of the prawn soakers on the bank who had just seen land my fish walked up and cast straight out over the snag!I asked him if he was aware I was fishing there and his reply was that I did not own the river.The conversation became a bit heated (I did question his parents marital status) and I pulled up and left.Otherwise a very good day!

i wouldnt be too worried though as i find that you can only pull one fish off the snag and then you have to wait a while before you can get another so you were probably better off for moving

where abouts in the swan were you fishing??

It's a tricky one Jeff. For this guy to do what he did out of just wanting to try the same piece of water would take a small brain and no consideration.

However, the etiquette that we afford each other as Bream Sportsfishermen is not known to people outside the fraternity. Whilst it would come down to common courtesy, I'm not aware of the balance of the conversation. This guy may have been relying on landing a fish to take home for dinner.

I've heard of a similar happening with my newly converted best mate. He went down to one of the local hotspots and started fishing a snag from the shore with our 2" twin tail pumpkinseed plastics. A prawn soaker had been parked for a while casting back to the same snag. My mate made a few casts and landed a couple of good sized fish. The guy in the boat basically called him an idiot for letting them go.

Remember, they have a different approach and thought process to catching Bream. You don't see many let go that are caught on bait do you ???

Same could be said about boats as well.

It's great to go out with guys like GeoffP who slow down near other boats that are fishing. This is the right thing to do and doesn't hurt to do it.

If nothing else comes out of forums such as this, I hope people learn that there is a right and a wrong way to fish.

Here's a curly one

I slow down going past someone fishing as well, but I got questioned as to why one day.
My little boat throws out a much bigger wake going 4-8 knots than flat out (6-10 inches compared to 2-3).
If you are going dead slow there is no wake - but dead slow shits me

I said because of the noise, but just got told that anything underwater would have heard you a mile away anyway - which is pretty true, I remember snorkelling thinking a boat was about to run over me, only to look up and see it a couple of hundred meters away.

So what would everyone prefer??

A boat going past fast and noisy with little wake or slow and quiet with a bigger wake (I know there is the 'dead slow' option but when was the last time anyone did this near you while you were fishing? - maybe it's time to educate?)

I think the bieest problem is that amny boats slow down at the last minute for a look and throw a fair bit of was.

It also depends on the boat. I have found that some throw more than others, so I suppose it's a personal experience decision.

while I have no problem with someone elses choice of fishing method (if its legal) or there right to take fish,I had a problem with this guy hijacking the snag and shutting me out.

shoulda thrown that stick fish you nailed the other week at him, or weren`t you close enough. Then again that stick fish probably would have killed him. Just got it developed, and it looked awesome, hard to believe it was landed on 4pd.

As to Dave's question i rather have a boat go past me at 6 knots with alot of wake rather than powering past me at top speed simply because it is the rules of the water (in queensland anyway).

I always slow down for people fishing off the bank as well as other boats it is just a matter of consideration.

However what gets me lately is young blokes in tinnys goin flat stick up and down the river in a 6 knot zone right where you are fishing for no apparent reason. I have had a few things to say to a few of these blokes lately with one of my mates and since he is 6 foot 6 and bout 150kg solid they seem to have a different attitude when they come past me lately
