Tips on fly fishing?

Hey everyone,

I've been wanting to get a fly rod for quite some time now. So, I just want to see what you guys have caught on flies and any tips on using a fly rod.

Tend to save my flyfishing for trout now days.
But I have caught brown and rainbow trout, bream, flathead, whiting, herring, bass, chopper tailor that I can think of. Pics I would have to dig for


As for tips buy a decent rod (will probably cost $200 plus) and a decent line. For bream and most estuary fish you can skimp a bit on the reel. Find someone who knows what they are doing to teach you to cast. Remember its not about the amount of force its all about the timing.

Check your leader and Practice undoing knots. Its amazing how you think your casting well then check your leader and miraculously there are knots (I'm pretty sure the manufacturers actually put the knots in as part of the leaders and tippets cause it couldn't possibly be my casting). And it would help to be about 2 to 3 foot taller because flies always get stuck in trees just too high to reach.

Learn to tie flies. Its great catching fish on flies you've tied yourself. But be prepared to look at the world in a different way. (I wonder if the neighbours cat would miss a small patch of skin, cause its fur would make great zonker strips)?

I have been flying out the back of the sticks at Aquinas with some luck.
What colour flies are best for bream i have been using white cloulored ones for bream and green cloured ones for flatties is this right?

go the other way round mate, white for flatties kills em
i use a white and gold clouser for flatties they go nuts, mind you im sight fishing in bout 18inches of water sometimes

Personally if you are just going to try FF.Then get something that is cheap .Just in case you don't like FF why you wouldn't like it is beyond me but some dont.
And yes I have been getting Bream on flies but I am only surface fishing for them at present .Even lost the odd school mullie

If you want to just give it a go & don't want to spend the cash get in touch with a flyfishing club near you & the members will happily take you out & impart their knowledge.

Afterwards you can ask about gear etc.. but to begin with you will be able to talk to people that are passionate about the sport who will show you the correct way of going about gear preparation & the finer aspects of casting.

Jugglerman is spot on!
If you get fairdinkum on FF you will want to learn the correct way to do it so you aren't in-graining bad habits that will need fixing later on, getting to a club for a few weeks will set you off on the right path.
This is what I done about 4.5months ago and am enjoying fishing more than ever......

p.s, that is a cracking Brown, if only there where fish like that around my area.

I do alot of trout fly, but the best fun is with little closer minnows or simialr bait fish patterns for estuary perch. On a hot summer night use a surface bogong moth too they can work wonders or little white moth imitation when the perch are rising. I have only ever got a couple of bream using small shrimp style flies, hven't done alot of bream fly fishing though.

I get all my flies from http://troutflies.com.au/ they are cheap & high quality plus it takes a about a week to recieve your flies. Well worth checking out

I've been looking at a lil shrimp immatation fly at the tackleworld down here. But, another thing is that I probably wont get the chance to do any trout fishing because most of the trout spots are too far away.

Pivot, have a look at that site it has alot of saltater flies & shrimp immitations aswell
