New Baitcaster

G'Day Crew,

Looking at buying a new low profile baitcaster. I have both Daiwa and Shimano gear, both have there good and bad points but enjoy all of them.

Want to flick some lures/plastics about for bream, bass etc.

Which reel would you choose and why?

Shimano Aldebaran

Shimano Core 50mg

Daiwa Alphas - R

Daiwa Sol

All of those reels listed above will do the job, Don't bother buying a Sol if you can get the Alphas (CRBB and better handle ect.). I have not used the Core 50MG or Aldebaran, but I've heard great things about them. Personally, I would go for the Aldebaran or Core. I've also heard rumors of another Alphas coming out soon. Also, take a look on TackleTour for the review on the Alphas, Aldebaran and SOL. You can also find the pictures of the new alphas on there.

Personally for me I woudl be only outlaying my money on the R edition.

I have an alphas r edition and its great. I have a few baitcast reels that i use for bass the the r edition is one of the better. Super smooth and is a pleasure to use.

What size lures do you want to throw?

If you are after really light weigh lures then look at the Dawia Pixy.

Hey man from the selection I think I would go core, JUST from what I heard about it but I never really tried any of them been wanting to get a baitcaster combo for awhile. but I've been looking at the Shimano curado they look alright and been hearing things bout it aswell. You should go have a look at some of them. They should be around the same price range I'm pretty sure.

Is the Pflueger Patriarch XT suited for casting lightweight plastics? Looks sort of large to me.

If you are looking for a finesse reel, I suggest you have a good look at these reels:

The Patriarch is quite large, the XT is noticeably smaller and lighter... My larger patty can throw 6g no worries and I'm still learning, so I've little doubt the XT could handle lighter weights in the hands of someone with more experience.

chronarch 100D while being a 100 size casts light weights very well, i have no trouble throwing 3inch powerbaits on 1/12th etc and would give you the ability to tackle larger fish as well

if you are after a bream specific BC and have no need for any reserve power the core 50 etc are all nice

something not mentioned yet are the 50 size calcuttas and the new cardiff 50dc if you wanna splurge
