Stop lure hooks rusting

Using my lures in the salt, i always find they rust up very quick, some have only been used once but there on the way!

I normally fish, then once home hun the hose over them and the reel etc. I then get tuna oil on my fingers and rub it onto the hooks to "stop it rusting"

what do you guys do? as i need to save on so many dam hooks

Aniseed oil / essence mate - all lures get a spray from new, then after they've had a wash down and dry after fishing, another go, works a treat, plus depending on who you listen to aniseed is a pretty fine attractant

Cooking oil should be fine, stops the rust and shouldn't put the fish off, some people on this site have said they use flavoured cooking oil spray as a scent, so I'd imagine some of that would be good as a rust preventative on your hooks too.

I'll keep using the tuna oil with Aniseed then. Dam salt water!

Just wondering would using wd40 be any use?
I dunno if it would put the fish off or not...but that is what i have been using..

i just keep running them umder fresh water then dtry them and it works too.

WD-40 is pretty stinky, it has a strong "petroleum" smell that I don't think I want on my terminal tackle. The other issue is that I don't think it actually provides rust protection, it is a de-watering agent (WD=Water Displacement). It makes the water run off, but I'm not sure that what is left actually provides corrosion protection. There used to be (probably still is) a "marine" version of CRC 5.56 that I think did help prevent corrosion.

The CRC web site had this snippet in it's history page:
"On October 6, 1958, a Pennsylvania corporation was formed and was called Corrosion Reaction Consultants, Inc. The company began making and selling "CRC Corrosion Inhibitor" - a multi-purpose corrosion inhibitor/lubricant that with later modifications, developed into CRC 556."

Some of the other products like Inox or Lanoguard might offer corrosion protection too, but again, they are stinky.

Interesting comments on the use of aniseed, its something I hadn't thought about for a long time but will give it a shot. I remember aniseed being used as an attractant in coarse fishing matches in Uk a long long time ago and was, I believe, subsequently banned in many areas. It was deemed an unfair advantage at the time and was frowned upon. Similarly hemp seed was widely used, very successfully, but also not considered to be fair. Ah well this was thirty or so years ago, so I guess I'm showing my age
