Okuma Epix question
Hi all
Just a quickee, I'm getting an Okuma Epix EFS20 and i want to load it with fireline. So will 125yds of 6lb fireline be enough to fill the spool? Cheers breamobasser

mate you will need alot more fireline than 125yrd to fill an epix spool, or load 1/2 to 3/4 spool with mono then join your fireline to it and fill the rest..

Not sure about 6lb, but I know that 125yd of 4lb definately doesn't fill mine. I needed to add a fair bit of mono backing. I'd say you will need to with 6lb as well, since it is not that much thicker than the 4lb. Just use some cheap mono as you'll be unlikely to ever see it again while bream fishing.

Here's a good way of doin it.
Spool your firelin on to your soare spool. If it doesn't fill the spool (which it almost definately wont) then fill the rest with mono. Just remember to leave 1/8th" from the spool lip. Then, spool the line onto your main spool, from the spare. Tis will then reverse things and put the mono on bottom ant the fireline on top! HTH Dave |

Exactly what my reply was going to be!
As for cheep backing, I nearly got spooled this time last year by a 23kg Jew on 4 kg line off the beach fishing for Bream! |

Thanks lads
Would I be better to use a 300yds spool of fireline and fill it completely with fireline or do you recommend to put a mono backing on then the fireline. Is there any pros or cons for this Or does it just come down to your budget Cheers breamobasser

its mainly a budget issue.
On baitcasters you need mono, as the fireline doesn't grip to the spools very well under heavy loads. On spin rods its not really a hassle, especially when talkin about bream fishing. you could get 300yds and do both spools though! Dave |

I reckon you definately need the mono backing on the fireline to prevent slippage, but otherwise yeah...
one problem with that method of using ur spare reel to load up the backing is...the spare spool is smaller than the primary! I have an EFS 20 too and the spare spool was noticable smaller and I had to overspool it to get around the right amount of fireline on the primary... You could always just give it to the local tackle store to load it up for you with backing, shouldnt be too much of a hassle
