I'm a fan of the Nitro range of rods ... they are not cheap but are not too bad.

They have several models geared towards the Bream lure angler depending of your circumstances.

Your hard earned will stay mostly in Australia, you will have an ultra-light, sexy looking, bream-specific rod, made by the best rod builder in the world.

MILLERODS - very hard to go past.

Cheers,

Jim

The best money can buy has got to be a custom jobby IMO
Have a chat to a few of the builders around the site and see what they can tee up for you.

I have a daiwa heartland,z 2-6 pound with 2 pound fireline,
just pulled in a 5-6 kilo snapper with it down busslton in
the bay ,the action on the rod was fantastic lots of head thumping
and big runs and the blank handled perfect and got the fish in the boat.

Question

I've actually been thinking about this question abit lately but I'd like to pose it in a slightly different way.

Now that Black Diamond has closed their doors and their awesome rods are no more .... what is available on the market of a similar quality. What should we be considering as a viable alternative??

Cheers
Nathaniel

I use the BD rods and have struggled to find anything to match in terms of rod design - problem is I like the short stubby butts too much now and struggle with the longer ones. I was looking on the Hotrods website tonight and he does a rod with a short butt but seems to be only in a 6' model......

mostly True DJC2,
the reason i only 'promote' my Stubby on the Stalker iS because it a Ultra light softer blank. as all the BD 'short butt' users will know Steve used a fairly moderate taper blank, this allows a level of shock absorbsion that allows a short butt on a 7' rod to be used without breaking your wrist...

in comparison the majority of the blank i use are a faster taper and stiffer in the butt section. IF i where to build a ULF or LXF for instance with a short / stubby butt the balance of the rod would go out the window and the anglers ability to simply keep hold and control the rod would be compromised.

where i can easily get away with it with the ULMF 6'6 and 7' models as they are a softer med/fast taper.

it seems the market trend (for bream rods)has settled pretty well in the fast to extra fast blank slot at the moment and softer moderate rods are slowly becomming harder to find on the shelf.

off the top of my head there would be a few alt. for a short butt option both custom and off the Shelf.

as mentioned my Stalkers' are short to Stubby and i can do my ULMF 6'6 and 7' in the same style.

i have played with a few Millers in the UL slot that would and do handle short butts very comfortably. (cant rememeber the models ?)

Gary Howard used to do a few softer bream rods although i havent seen any of his recent stuff.

thinkg the Egrell S1 has a fairly short butt too (Dave might confirm ?)

off the shelf the only 2 that come to mind are some of the Loomis stable and LiveFibre built rods (lightening series??)

so an alternative might not be that hard to find...

I recently bought 2 x Okuma 6'6" 2 piece rods (2-4 kg) for me and a mate. He no longer wants the 2nd one I bought. Has a short butt and excellent feel. Will let it go for $150.

Thanks Hotrods - thats a useful explanation to know going forward. Interestingly I have two BD Clearcut Plus' (6'6), one has a definitely faster taper than the other......

If anyone is like me and didnt know a huge amount about taper etc, there is a very good article in this months Modern Fishing magazine about this

Cheers
Darren
